More Dog Food Guilt- vent

DH gets a little testy when I spend 60-100 bucks on a box of THK.

    Mine too!

The place where we swim Jack is a retailer of THK, and they've given me tons of samples (which the dogs liked of course because they are the opposite of picky), but ultimately, it would be quite the battle with DH if I decided I wanted to switch to that-lol!

You know, between Sally's allergies and Jack's elbow issues, I have spent countless hours on the internet researching dog food.  You know what the underlying theme of all my research was?  Dog food zealots are NUTS--every.last.one.  It's fine to have opinions and share them but telling people they are killing their dogs with , etc is not only inaccurate (there have been very few independent studies done on dog diets) but a really ineffective way to get your point across.

I had a conversation about religion a while back, and the idea of religion is like a sandwich, offer it to me if I'm hungry, don't just shove it down my throat.

I think dog food ideals could be applied to that same statement.

As it turns out, we got a new fridge and a small chest freezer so plenty of space to have a shelf for thawing, as the girls do very well on a natural diet.  I am not stuck on any one way of feeding raw either. Prey Model Raw (essentially, meat, bones and organs only) dries their coats/skin out quickly, and Echo will tear up the lawn eating the grass and roots and dirt without any ground veggies in her diet.  So they get veggies, rarely grain- Echo can't handle it at all but the bichon girls can, eggs, yogurt, fish, RMBs of all sorts, organs, fish oil, kelp and Vit C and E.

THK results in large poops.  I do think I'll use it for travelling and the rare case that I would board the girls but not making it a regularly used thing, in addition to the pricetag!

But again, as you said SillySally, I find it really insulting when I'm told I don't love my dogs because of what I feed them.  Ugh.

I agree, and I hope I didn't offend anyone when I said " We (humans) expect animals under our care to thrive on food that comes from bags or cans, but I'll bet you wouldn't let your kids eat only highly processed food. If fresh food is important for our health, it's important for our pets too."

Maybe I should have phrased that differently. I didn't mean to sound like a food Nazi. Embarrassed Jessie gets a 50/50 mix of canned and dry food, with some cooked food too, and is doing very well.

I didn't think you were being a food nazi, I happen to believe that fresh is better and I try to feed the dogs and my human kids as fresh and naturally as possible.

    No worries :)
