Should Kibble be Soaked?

I put water in, just because I have four dogs here, and want to be absolutely sure everyone is well hydrated.  But, I don't soak it.

Bugsy hates it if it gets soggy.  The only time it gets soggy is when he doesn't eat it right away due to traveling or a funny tummy so that is a factor but even when we had a 'oops' I already fed him mix-up and put his food in the fridge until feeding time he didn't want it.  Doesn't like it if you soak it and put it in a kong either.

I float his food because he is hit or miss with drinking.  Some days he drinks a ton others not so much so I'd rather make sure he gets some water.  He loves the water in his food and drinks it first THEN eats the kibble.  Its like gravy Wink

Also he gets a ton of supplements so the water helps disperse them too

his kibble is grain free so it stays unchanged for ages and even soaked doesn't expand much - honestly like others have said I think the conflicting science means no one knows

We have a fast eater here too, so we tried soaking the kibble.  I guess it probably made it easier to digest once it hit her stomach (often unchewed!) if it was soaked first, but it didn't slow her down.  I used to put an object in for her to eat AROUND.,... that worked until she learned to take it OUT so she could eat faster.  Then we used an upside down non-spill bowl, which is cheaper than the custom made bowls for all-you-can-inhale eaters, but worked pretty well for us.  She's slowed down a lot now, and I can just feed her in a normal bowl, but she still belches after each meal.....

Just a P.S.  Most of us around here are feeding premium foods that don't contain it, but if your dog food has citric acid in it, some people think you should not soak it because it has been associated with bloat.  I have no idea if that's true, but thought I'd mention it just in case.

I had to go check the bags for this one.  Oven Baked Tradition has no citric acid as well as the Taste of the Wild Pacific Stream.

Thanks for the advise.  I had a bloat scare once and REALLY don't want to deal with that again!

If I'm going to feed kibble, I always put water on it. Having had dogs actually physically choke (to the point of passing out) because they ate dry food too quickly, I will never again feed kibble dry. It just helps it go down a little bit easier.

I dont feed kibble, but when I did I always put water in it.

My dad's dog likes to inhale his kibble and always hacks after eating. My dads solution to this was "Let him choke himself and he'll learn to eat slower" Confused
I told him to put some water in his food, and what do you know, no more choking Wink

I belong to a Yahoo group for dogs with pancreatitis and some of the members soak their dog's kibble so they can digest it easier.

When I feed kibble (usually with a dollop of canned or home cooked topper) I splish a good amount of water to wet all the kibbles down.

Otherwise Gobie has a hard time swallowing just dry kibble. He'll take a bite, chew chew, and then swallow, swallow, swallow, like he's uncomfortable.

I don't soak, but my dogs generally drink as they are eating or drink immediately after.
