Green eye goop?

    Green eye goop?

Max has had greenish colored eye goop coming out of his right eye for about 3 days now.  It started out clear and I just thought it was a random eye goop, but then it kept happening.  Now today he has had two in his other eye, both green.  Is this an eye infection?  I am planning on making a vet appt tomorrow, but I am just curious if any of you have ideas on what this is.

     Thanks!

It does sound like an infection.  Best to make that vet appointment.  My Shari had chronic dry eye all her life, so I never messed with letting any drainage go longer than a couple of days.  Green definitely makes me think infection.  Hope you find answers and it's nothing that can't be cleared up by some antibiotic or similar meds.

sorry I didn't see this earlier... colored goop usually means infection, whether secondary or primary is hard to tell without seeing the doggy.

    Hope he feels better!

Usually "color" of any kind isn't good -- but then again, sometimes 'green' can simply be pollen/grass stuff that the eye protected itself against.  But yes, vet!  Be VERY sure because eye stuff can get out of control so fast.

Thanks!  I made an appointment for tomorrow.  Hopefully all goes well.  Although, I don't know how they'll figure out what it is.  I guess they'll just put him on antibiotics?  Anyway, I will update tomorrow!

One thing they'll probably do is put some drops (called a stain) in his eyes and then look through a scope for tears or scratches on the eyeball.  Also, they may do a tear test, which is nothing more than a little piece of what looks like litmus paper that they hold in the corner of the eye nearest the nose (where the tear ducts are) and see what his tear production is like.   If I remember correctly, they hold it there for 30 seconds or one minute.  It sounds worse than it is.  I'm sure they'll ask if rubs his eyes more than usual lately, when you first noticed it, etc.

Hopefully it's not too serious and can be cleared up easily.  Please let us know!

She's right -- that is EXACTLY what the vet will do.  They do have a special "light" to look in the eye -- they stained Kee's eyes this morning (both of them) to look for a lesion and actually did the dry eye test last time she was there.  Neither are horrible.  And there are different types of eye "antibiotics" depending on what the vet figures is wrong.  typically they will give an eye ointment rather than drops anymore -- simply because it stays IN the eye better.  Have the vet show you HOW to do it if you've never done such a thing.
