    Advantix

You know...I really don't want to put any chemicals in my dog if I can help it. I HATE heartworm preventive because its really almost a pesticide....but use it anyway "just in case" he gets bit by a HW carrying mosquito...  but I always have drawn the line when it comes to flea preventive.   Well....I have been taking Gibby to a couple different day cares here of there on a Sunday when we are gone golfing for longer than I want to leave him by himself.  One of the places that I checked into but never took him, required flea prevention before leaving your pet there.  I told her I didn't want to use it...that it would be different if my dog had fleas..of course I would use something.  Really...I had 2 dogs on 2 acres of land when we are all outside most of the day in the summer and NEVER had a flea in the 20 years we lived there.   But in the end.....and only because I had a box of Advantix in my house ( a vet where I work had gone to a seminar and it was given to him and he didn't have a dog much less a large one that this box of advantix was for ) so I thought.......maybe since he is going to different places occasionally I should put some on him.  So I did a week ago Sunday night when he came home from a day camp.        Next day he started sneezing a lot ( I started another thread about that ) and that continued about a week.  Yesterday my husband says "whats this" some junk that he scratched off of Gibbys back and put on a paper towel. It was almost like little scabs with of course a hair or two scratched off with it.  It kind of reminded me of when Ollie had a stalf infection and we would scratch off some of the bumps and the hair went with it.   Its on the skin ( feels like hard gravel...probably pimply kind of things ) where the fur is so thick that I can't see the skin.  But its also where we put the Advantix.

Now maybe this is all a coincidence....but I'm just thinking........wonder if Advantix could cause this AND symptoms of sneezing.

I don't think so, but, I don't know. Maybe he's allergic to it?

My dogs are on Advantix all year round (our area does have a bad flea/tick problem) without any complications.

I used Advantix on Bailey once... and never will again. He didnt get any scabbys but it was all red and itchy where the Advantix was, and he was puking and was acting sick for over a week after. He only gets frontline now, and he has no problems with that. I hate putting chemicals on Bailey too, he gets Interceptor monthly because i am not going to risk having to put him through heartworm treatment again. We have fleas and ticks pretty bad here, but i dont put frontline on him every month. I brush him almost every day and check him after he runs in the field for ticks, and its been working so far because he hasnt had any frontline at all this year, and i havent found 1 flea on him yet. Ive never heard of a dog daycare requiring flea meds.. Baileys daycare only requires a rabies and distemper vacc.

The ones that he goes to doen't require it...but in my search for other day cares that are open on the weekends I came across one that does require it. Well...and she is not open on the weekends so I won't use her.....but that is what got me thinking.........he is with lots of dog... in a dog area both inside and out....that maybe just for now I should put it on him.........   not sure that was a great idea anymore though!
