I'm Scared

    I'm Scared

Yesterday I took Maxine and Teddi to the vet. I highly suspected Miss Teddster had another UTI and sure enough she does. We put her on antibiotics, my vet prescribed Cephalexin as you can get it free at Meijers! and we did a blood panel to be sure there is no reason for these to keep recurring.

I took Max in because we found a lump in her mouth on the right side back by her back molar on the inside. Hard to find not sure how we did. Anyway we saw it last week and took her in. My vet took one look and said "that does not look good!" Indifferent He tried to swab it but that didn't do anything. So we did a pre operative blood panel and Maxine is going to have a biopsy done. He strongly feels it is cancer Crying No not my Max!!! He thinks, and hopes he is wrong (me too) it is either a melanoma, a squameous cell tumor (did I put that down right?) or a fiberous tumor. When he does the biopsy if they can take it out they will. If not he said there is a good oncologist surgeon not far away he will recommend. He said it may involve more than surgery. We can't do that. We can't afford it first of all, and secondly I don't know I could put any dog through that. They do not understand what is happening. Not even my Maxine who is the air I breathe. I am so scared. I can't imagine my life with out her.

I know I am jumping the gun. We don't know anything yet. She is just so very very special to me, words can not describe how I feel about her. Right now I know she is healthy and fine. She is energetic, sound, wants to run and play so I see all that as good signs. It is in her mouth and she has not shown any discomfort about eating, and knowing her history and not eating I think she would. I am so worried about her. We had a deal, she was to be the oldest golden retriever ever, I believe the record is held by a dog named Max who made it to 18 1/2. Max only has 7 more years to break his record. No pressure. Stick out tongue

Keep my Maxine in your thoughts. I will update when I know more.

Oh Ann!  I'm so sorry to read this and don't know what to say except I will keep you and Max in my heart and thoughts.  Here's to some positive results.  (((((Hugs)))

Good thoughts and prayers for a benign report.  Hugs too.

Oh dear, Ann.  I so know how you're feeling.  You have my good vibes for your Max to beat the other Max & live to a very nice old age.

Ann -- I'm sorry.  But you can, if you want, go ahead and put her on a cancer diet right away.  At the times when *I* have had to watch and wait and hope, there''s a certain amount of satisfaction in knowing you are denying cancer opportunity and food to grow.  At this point I pretty well keep ALL my dogs in a grain-free diet as much as possible (which is essentially a cancer diet).

Did the vet completely rule out a bad tooth?

    • Gold Top Dog

Yes tooth and gum have definitely been ruled out. It is in the roof of her mouth near the tooth.

I am VERY hestant to change her food. She was the worlds pickiest eater until we put her on the food she is on now. For 8 1/2 years she ate MAYBE 3 cups of food a week. I am worried she will stop eating post biopsy when her mouth is sore. Her biopsy is scheduled right now for Thursday but my vet is out, so it could change when he is in tomorrow.

Thanks for all the thoughts. I need them.

Good luck Maxine.  Ann, just take one day at a time.  There were days when Willow was sick that I was taking it hour by hour.  You are a great mom to her.

Good luck and lots of jingles!  I'm heart sick for you.  If it's cancer, it may be something not aggressive that they could just remove.

Ann, I'm sending all the good thoughts I can. I'm praying for the biopsy to be benign. Many {hugs} for you.

Just heard from the vet. Max did fine under anesthesia, for her biopsy. I can bring her home in about an hour. He did a punch biopsy, as he said he did not want to make it worse. He does feel it is cancer, but does not know what kind. The labs will tell us more, and what our next course of action will be. So now I get to wait until sometime next week. Oh yeah!

Oh Ann!  I'm so sorry.  I'm still holding out hope that Maxine's cancer is a VERY slow growing one & you have LOTS of time left with her.

Hugs for Max - please give her an extra belly rub from me.
