Ulcerated cornea

    Ulcerated cornea

Kodi evidently gouged his eye on a branch or something in the yard.  I took him to the vet as soon as I saw him rubbing the eye.  He's on two kinds of drops, pain killers and wearing a cone.  It's been three weeks and the cornea is not getting better so he will see an ophthalmologist tomorrow.  My vet feels he may need a grid keratectomy.  Has anyone had experience with this procedure?

Chyna had one done last summer.  The go in & scrape the ulcer with a needle to re-inflame it.  It was very simple, & she was in no more discomfort after the surgery, than she was before the surgery.  After the scraping, she was completely healed in about 2 weeks.

Thanks for the info.  Do you know if Chyna got the ulcer from an injury? Can they tell if her vision is normal again?  Did she need pain pills and/or Atropine and antibiotic drops after the procedure?  I hope Kodi will not be in pain - I'm worried about that.

Billy and Kee Shu (totally unrelated incidents) have BOTH had ulcerated corneas just within the last couple of months.  Drive me CRAZY!!    IN Billy's case the vet gave me antibiotic ointment and atropine (which simply dilates the eye to reduce pain) and Kee only got the antibiotic ointment.

Truly DO NOT worry about the vision.  A dog's vision is dead last on it's list of senses that they use -- seriously -- their vision is really not wonderful to begin with (they don't have nearly the level of vision we do -- their other sense are SO much sharper they really don't need it).

It should heal fine -- don't be afraid of the atrophine b/c it helps -- just keep the dog in a low light environment for a few days.

Chyna's ulcer was from an injury.  She collided with one of my other dogs.  She still has a tiny scar on her cornea, but the opthamologist doesn't think that it affects her vision.  I asked for pain pills after the procedure, & she was sent home on Rimadyl for 5 days.  I discontinued them after 2.5 days because she wasn't painful.  I had to treat her with atropine & an antibiotic for 10 days after the procedure.

Fingers crossed that everything goes well for Kodi!

Thanks, again.  I'll let you know.

How did that opthamologist visit go?

Oh, I'm sorry............I thought I had answered here, but evidently I didn't.  Kodi had the procedure last Wed.  The poor guy - his eye looked pretty messed up the next day, but each day it looks better and better.  He gets two types of ointment each day, pain killers, atropine every other day and has to keep the cone on.  He goes back for a recheck next Wed.  The ophthalmologist said ulcerations on the cornea are usually NOT the result of trauma to the eye - they don't really know WHY it happens.  Weird, huh?  I just hope this never happens again.
