The clinic I work at has a massive ringworm issue that we've been battling for months. It started with taking in known ringworm kittens from a family who traps and spay/neuters feral cats. Every kitten we take in from them has ringworm...they must live in a huge spore bubble or somesuch. Then someone dropped off 8 other kittens on the doorstep..all covered in ringworm. From there on, in spite of treatement, the spores have been spreading. No matter how much they're isolated, nor how much we glove up, bleach ourselves, spray ourselves with disinfectant, and so on, nor how many treatments they get (they get dips, topicals, orals, etc) their fungus holds on. It's been months, and has spread to other stray kittens, a cat we've had at work since the beginning of the year, a groomer and a grooming client (who isn't even on the same side of the clinic as the kittens). Cursed fungus. None of us will bring our pets to work at all.
Another tech adopted a kitten who was thought to be over his ringworm...no scalies, no uv light glowing (though that isn't accurate always) after about 4 months of being at work, and her dog and another cat got it. And now, Aesop has it. I am livid, as I think I'm one of the few who is extra obsessive about bleaching, washing, gloving, and repeating. I spray, spray, spray myself. I assume he got it from nosing my clothing. It isn't confirmed..there's a culture we started today, but it looks pretty ringworm like to me, and the vet thought it was also. One spot on his nose. I'm especially not pleased, since even though he got it from my workplace, they cover none of the treatment.
He has ointment to start with, and if it's confirmed, he'll go on orals. Hopefully we caught it early enough that it won't go to any other spots and no one else will get it. We'll be hopeful.
I'd be less irritated if I had come down with it, I expect that when I work there. But I expect that if I take reasonable or above average disinfecting measures, I'm safe from bringing these things home
