How to feed a sick dane

Hey guys..... Gibby is sick...doc told me chicken with rice for a couple of days.  So I pulled the only chicken I have from my freezer which is 5 drumsticks...and I cooked them and also cooked rice.  Now.... I can't imagine how much to feed him.  Hes almost 80 lbs, I don't want to feed him too much.  So I have maybe about a cup of cooked rice in a container....figured I will cut up a cooked chicken leg to see what it does.  Tonight I will give him 2 smaller portions if he doesn't throw up the first one..... then maybe tomorrow I will give him some in the morning..and see what goes for the day before switching back to EP.

I don't know if he got some junk from his toys in him...or what.  I know he is going to be one of those guys with the touchy stomach...from the time I got him I could tell that. Ollie is like that, and I used to be soooo happy that Bubblegum was not.

After throwing up his breakfast several hours after eating it.... he was frantically trying to eat grass outside.  I mean frantically...it took everything I had to pull him away...and of course he still came in and barfed up grass...which was about 2 minutes after I gave him Pepcid.     I know they say dogs eat grass when they are sick to their stomach...and I was not a real believer in that. I know a lot of dogs eat grass because they like it. But he does it so frantically that it is crazy to watch. Do you know....at one point today before I realized what was going on....he went over the fake greens Christmas swags I just bought and tried to chew on them. I thought he was just being mischievous.

But can anyone help .... how do I figure out how much rice and chicken to feed him?

I use boiled ground beef and rice and I do somewhere between a 1/2 mix to 1/3 meat 2/3 rice (the vet says 1/4 meat and 3/4 rice but to me that's just not enough meat).  I usually feed the same amount they would get in kibble, but use more meals when they are sick.  On kibble my dogs eat 2 cups a day total, so on beef/rice they eat 1 cup twice a day, or a little less than a cup 3x a day.

It all depends on the dog -- my homecooked I give Luna (30 pounds) about 1 cup twice a day and Billy (30 pounds) gets about 2/3 cup twice a day and that maintains their weight.

I'd think Gibby woud need at least a cup twice a day or maybe 3 times a day.

If he's going after greens THAT frantically why don't you get him a green supplement like Barley Green (there are many at the health store for humans and you can use those on dogs).  He may need something he's not getting and just use the child's amount in his food.  You may not ultimately have to give it every day -- maybe a couple of times a week.  See how he tolerates it and if it settles things down.

(the vet says 1/4 meat and 3/4 rice but to me that's just not enough meat).

The dog's body processes protein far differently than the rice.  And the point of doing the bland diet is to rest the gut.  The more protein that is in the food the longer the stomach has to roll it around to get it to digest all the protein before it moves things along -- that's why the vet is saying such a low amount of protein.

It's not about "balance" -- the vet is deliberately keeping the protein super low because of how their digestion happens -- it's about giving the stomach something to *work on* and keep them from getting too hungry while not causing too much stress in the digestion process.

Hope Gibby is feeling better really soon Dyan.

    Thanks everyone!

We gave him about 1 1/2 c. of rice that had cut up chicken in it. Then about 1 1/2hrs later got another 1 cup at least.

Hopfully that is enough for now!

      I'm sorry Gibby isn't feeling well; hope he gets better very soon. Jessie has a sensitive stomach ( probably because she's part GSD) and eats first and asks questions later, which occasionally results in frantic grass eating. About the amount to feed; you can calculate how many calories are in the home cooked and feed him enough to equal the calories he was getting in his kibble. If you need any help, this site's a good resource;

    Thanks Jan.

I gave him about 1 1/2 c rice with chicken in it.   It looked so small compared to the 3 c of Eagle he eats. Gave him the same this morning.  I have more made in the fridge seperated into equal portions. But he has not vomited since I wrote yesterday... and this morning was playing as a regular morning.   Of course he hasn't had a BM for a while now...although he did have one SINCE he got sick...but I don't suppose rice and chicken are going to come out the same as the EP......    I'm anxious to just get him back to his regular food.         I will probably give him another portion of rice at around noon.....  and then supper maybe give him a small portion of EP.

Thinking about what I should really end up doing with him....he does seem to have a sensitive stomach since I got him.  I don't THINK he ate anything to make him sick...although I fixed a bunch of his toys that were ripped...and being the puppy that he is.... he had to chew the heck out of each and everyone......including breaking a sqeaker about 1 minute after I put it in a favorite toy and sewed it up.   One toy he had been chewing was one of the stuffies with the rope arms and legs... he did that one in the morning while I was on the computer.....and he was chewing the rope...I took the pieces from him...so don't think he could have swallowed too many, but maybe the slightest would make him ill.

The day before he threw up bile right before it was supper time...he used to do that a lot so I started feeding him more times a day...thinking that when his stomach was empty he would throw up.  Don't know if that was right....but he stopped it. But of course now he is back to eating twice a day....after all he is 7 months old.

Oh poor Gibby Sad  He might not poop because chicken and rice will be binding and also not have much fiber.  I would do as you say and if he seems fine give him some kibble.

You know just thinking out loud here ............Bugsy goes after grass some days as if it were catnip for a cat.  He will go out first thing in the morning and just started frantically eating grass.  He is also known to dive headfirst into some grass as we walk too.  I have made some connection to his allergies flaring up and his grass eating.  I wonder if Gibby has some allergies?  He has had skin issues and some stomach issues and has a bit of the devil in him at times..........When i figured out some of Bugsy's allergies (foods) he was calmer and we said goodbye to ear/skin issues.   And he does eat less grass although it still appears to be a delicacy on some days Stick out tongue He doesn't get sick though he just poops grass Ick!

Shew...mostly a bit of the divil in him at times....LOL!!!!!! Devil

He came to us with a skin problem....spots that took a while to go away....but has been fine since. I THINK.  Except where the bruise is from the ( not so ) Gentle Leader. And he has had a few stomach issues on and off...had to up the feeding times and such.   Never thought to put two and two together for allergies.     He does not eat grass unless he is sick though....where as Ollie used to sneak some all the time and then throw it up.

Got me thinking and watching on this one.
