Poor Emma Nems!

    Poor Emma Nems!

Emma's been touchy, lately. She's had a short fuse. She hasn't been working well, for me, so I just set her on the back burner. She's not entered in the next couple of shows we're going to. She's on a little vacation.

Because of the personality change, and because it's that time of year, I made her an appointment to have bloodwork run, this morning. Last night.... at 10:16, she started to have seizures. She had baby seizures for 47 minutes, then slept for 30, then LEAPT up to go fly bite in the corner for 30 more. That would be 1 hour, 17 minutes of seizuring. Then, we both crashed and I slept all night. She was against me, and didn't wake me again.

We went in to our appointment, told the vet what'd happened. Everybody was interested to see liver numbers, since liver problems are an Emma thing. All of her numbers were perfect. She's in great condition, blah blah blah. We discussed it, and it's only been 3 weeks since her last cluster. Her seizures are getting more frequent, and severe. Her diet is the best I can do. We work very hard not to stress her out. She gets calming herbs, and  oils, and massages, and acupuncture.

*sigh* I came home with a bottle of phenobarbitol. I knew, even when she was a puppy, that I might have to do this, one day. It's still hard for me. My best girl is going on seizure meds. I hate it, for her, and I hope they don't zonk her, too much. Of course, there are other medications that we can try if this doesn't work like it should, and she's on the lowest dose possible, and all of that good stuff.

I'm going to investigate gold bead implants, a little bit, and see if I can find someone near here that does more holistic stuff than Emma's acupuncturist (who is a regular vet, and performs acupuncture, not really a holistic vet). Hopefully, she won't have to take more than a minimal dose.

Aw, crap. That stinks. I know how it stinks. Hopefully she can be on a teensie dose, and then she'll feel loads better, and be able to go back and do all the shows and whatnot that she enjoys. That's what's important, after all, right?

    But yeah. Aw, crap.

Hugs to Emma - let's hope the meds make you feel all betters and you can stay on a teeny dose.  And Hugs to Jennie - I totally  understand - just when you think you've got it all licked, arrrgggh.  And hugs to Ena.  Just because.  Must hug the Crestie.  It's a Rule.  Ask Zhi.

She's taking it all like a trooper. Despite the extremely short temper she's had all week, she was VERY good at the vet's office, this morning. We rode with a friend, and she'd promised Emma coconut cookies, if she was good, so she shared a coconut cookie, after her appointment, and GRINNED like a fool all the way home, LOL. I took her for a burger (because she was promised that, too, when the nasty, mean tech poked her in the arm!), and she GRINNED even bigger.

Really, it's all part of it, for Emma. I'm sure *she'll* take it, just fine. It's her mom that's a silly, nervous wreck about everything.

And, of course hugging the Crestie is a rule. If you go to my friend's house, she has....a lot of them. You have to hug half a dozen Cresties. It's pretty amusing. Tiger jumps up and bites my hair. Little Miss yells "PICK ME UP!" Choxie jumps in the chair, and jumps down, and jumps in the chair, and jumps down. Ego runs up, and lifts his leg on me. Eros starts smiling, with his lips lifted and all 10 or so of his teeth showing. It's like a regular circus. Then, I sit down, and they all maul meSmile I love Cresteds!

Poor Emma, it's tough on your emotions seeing your baby lie that. Hope she gets loads better!

It is safe to give PB with joint stuff, milk thistle, and fish oil, right? She isn't on anything else, aside from the valium she had, yesterday, and I know those two are fine, together.

I would ask the vet.  Don't give SAMe with seizure meds.  But I'm not sure about anything else for sure.  Glucosamine is fine - it's just cartilage.  Callie would know about combining milk thisle and PB.  I thought for a second you were saying Peanut Butter.  LOL

Tiger jumps up and bites my hair.

Ha!  Zhi does this.  Not mine, I get annoyed and she knows it.  She does it to Patrick who has not so much hair to bite.  Sometimes she nails his bare scalp.  I'm like, "Why do you let her do that?"   He just shrugs.  In his world, dogs do stuff and there's not much you can do to stop it.

I did not know that about the SAMe. I don't use it, because she pukes it up (I know, she's weird) unless it's Denosyl. Denosyl is expensive, and doesn't seem to make a huge difference, so....

I'll call the vet, in the morning, before I give it to her. She's getting Ark Naturals Sea Mobility, right now. It's got sea cucumbers, glucosamine, MSM, chondroitin, all the good stuff. I'm pretty sure it'll be fine, but... meh. If she can't take that product, I'll just get something different, and feed it to Ena B. Ena will eat anything.

Does Zhi like to "flea chew" people, too? That's such a funny thing, to me. Ena and several of the other Cresties I know do it when they're excited, or when you're petting them "just right".

I've read that you need to give it in a small piece of food or it can irritate their throat; don't know if that would cause the vomiting.  I'm so sorry Jennie; you've done an amazing job of keeping her off seizure meds for several years and this really does stink. I hope she can still take milk thistle to protect her liver from the PB and that the lowest dose is enough.  I've never hugged a Crestie so I'm sending hugs to Ena too, and big hugs to you and Emma. Hope she's feeling much better very soon.

Oh, I'm sorry to read this Jennie.  Willow's liver values improved within two weeks of adding the Denosyl and Marin to the milk thistle.

She's a puker, LOL. She just.... doesn't keep certain things down. Her latest is eggs. Anything with egg in it.... right back on the rug. I think it's just one of her things.

In every OTHER way, she's doing great. You should see her coat! It's amazing. She's lean and muscled, and her gait is nice. She hasn't had any obvious pain in months, til her head started hurting, this week, with the seizures. She's all zonked out, now. I gave her a half dose, for the first dose, because I've given seizure meds to dogs before. I knew it would knock her out. I also read up, some, of course.... I'm not super excited about the three biggest side effects--- excessive thirst, hunger, and urination. Like incontinent Emma needs to pee more! I'll have to break out the Leaks No More, if her Dr approves. Hopefully, it won't be too bad. If it is, I'll put Ena's panties on her!

Ugh, been there done that all summer long with the Prednisone puppy.

    I've never hugged a Crestie

You should try it, you would like it!

Lori, I don't know how you do it, with all that beautiful fluff! I have a hard enough time with smells and staining and wetness related issues with Emma's little behind.

    • Gold Top Dog

Denosyl is like Super SAMe.  Defnitely check with the doctor about that one.  I know I can't take it with my depacote.

She hasn't had anything, today, except for a half dose of the PB this evening. She's soooo sleepy, poor little girl! I'm going to call the vet in the morning and ask exactly what is ok to give her and what is not. She *has* to have joint supplements of some kind, and if they want her on whatever they sell, that's fine. She also really needs her milk thistle, to protect her liver. I did tell them, today, that she's on it, but I want to make sure it's ok to use at the same time (like... on the same food) and won't hurt her or hurt the effects of her medicine.
