    Update: Shailer peed blood

    Well he technicaly didn't pee blood, blood just came out after he peed. It wasn't much just a couple of drops and then he didn't bleed again. I was taking him out for his walk and he was peeing on the road when I just glanced down and saw blood coming out after he had peed. I don't know if this is something to worry about or just let it be and if things get worse take him to the vet. He is eating, drinking, pooping normally.

    He's probably got a UTI, he needs to go to the vet.

    Does UTI happend like that? I will have to schedule an appointment. I just find it weird that he peed blood one time and that was it, so far. For today I will keep him in his crate and tomorrow when I let him out I will see if he pees again, if he does or doesn't he is still going to the vet.

    There is probably blood in the urine that you cannot see also.

    He is going to the vet first thing tomorrow I hope, if not I will have to wait for my dad to get back from his erand.

    Let us know how it goes!! *hugs*

     Blood= vet

     He's probably got a UTI.  Take him to the vet asap, because UTI's can be painful even if the dog doesn't look uncomfortable.  Should be cleared up with a course of antibiotics, hopefully.

    Took him to the vet this morning. He peed in the waiting room and the vet was there so he took a sample of it and it came back that he had bacteria but no crystals. The vet game me some antibiotics Cephalexin 500mg for 3 weeks. He said he should have done an x-ray but it was over my budget ( dad only gave me $100) it was actually going to be more than $100 with the office visit ($37.50) but he said he wasn't going to charge me for that because I help them out so much with the humane society. So he said as long as he didn't have crystals in his urine he should be fine with the antibiotics. He just told me to make sure he drank a lot of water and to add a little bit of salt to make him more thirsty. He said after his medicine is over and I still see signs to make sure to call him and also if I see him straining to pee to make an appointment ASAP because he could be blocked.

    Good -- there are lots of different antibiotics they use for UTIs.  don't use salt if you can help if -- add water to his food, even a tiny bit of broth -- but salt can bite you FAST.

    Can you get some sardines or jack mackerel?  The cheap ones are fine (jack mackerel is really cheap) and THAT is a natural salt and will make him drink lots.  A can of mackerel you can add to his food over several days (usually 2-4 fish in one can) and he'll love you for it anyway!!

     I second the sardines, and I used to crush a few boiled cranberries in with it for Dancer...until I got the cranberry tabs from Berte's Naturals;-)  Some dogs hate the tabs, but the sardine smell covers up the berry smell and most will eat it.

    I bought 3 cans of jack mackerel and 3 can of sardines how much do I give to him? The doctor said to give him the med with food so that he won't throw it up so I am giving him 1/2 cup of food and his med inside a hot dog 3 times a day.

    Will cranberry tabs help him? If so what kind do I need to buy?

    • Gold Top Dog

    Give him either 1/2 of a mackerel or 1 sardine a day in his food.

    Cranberry -- sure.  Give 2 capsules twice a day.  Cranberry is mostly glucose and glucose bonds with infection cells to help rinse them out of the body and not 'stick' to the urinary tract walls.

    I am giving him the mackerel with his food and he is drinking a lot of water. This morning when I went to give him his medicine he had a huge urine stain around the grass in his kennel and he was drinking lots of water when I gave him his food. I will see if the pharmacy in town sells the cranberry tabs.
