Split seasons (jennie_c_d)

Almost 3 months ago, I looked at my 6 month old baby, and went OMG IT CANT BE! I took her to the vet, and it certainly was.... pre estrus. She went through a very light season, and I figured.... well, it was early.

WRONG!!!!

Right now, we're house sitting, so she's wearing panties, because I don't want her messing up somebody else's unsoiled flooring. She's pretty good about it at home, but out and about.... meh. I'm ok with that, hence the panties. We use them fairly regularly. I took them off earlier, and noticed a spot. I blew it off. Then, my friend came over. She has an intact Chi. He gave her a good sniff, and was told to bug off. He did, being the gentleman that he is, and I walked over and pulled her panties off. BAM! There it was. This dog is HAIRLESS, and that is UGLY! I was so not expecting it.... Ugh!!!

So, my question for you wonderful breeders and show dog owners out there.... how common is a split cycle on the first season? Is it dangerous? Does it increase the risk of anything? Is she going to KEEP doing this (because if she is, she's SO spayed)? This is not a dog that I plan on breeding, but I'm keeping her intact to show her and get some experience in the ring. Later, she will be spayed and be competing in rally and obedience. I'll buy the puppy I want, rather than deal with all the ookiness. I do want this ring experience, and I'm learning SO MUCH from her, but GAH! I can't deal with every three months!

FWIW, I will be calling my vet and my mentor in the morning. This is really a vent and a send me your favorite repro link and story kind of post.

Yeck not fun I know... I have two girls who have done split seasons with very light seasons. It is a pain in the well you know.... One recently had what I would consider to be a "real" season. her sister still is stalled at a juvenille level.( more of a Blush stain than a true season) This is what I get for going out on the stud a less predictable pattern. It drives our males bonkers, making the adolescent Zion miserable so I kick him and the Hubs out to the RV to limit the torture. I am showing all three, the girls and Zion so alterations are not possible. If you rthink your little girl is a mess you should have heard the phone calls I got when my friend's Mastiff came in to season for the first time !!

Hang in there your Breeder should have some great and much more specific advice for you !

LOL, I bet a Mastiff season is a little scary, especially the first time!

This is nothing major, again, but there is more swelling than last time, so she may actually, ya know, look like she's in season this go round. Fortunately, I have panties, and I can deal with it, I just hate it for her, because it means she's going to be staying home a lot more. Poor little brat child.

LOL, I can only imagine. We've discussed it, and I'm just going to give Ena some more time. The funny thing is.... she looks utterly fantastic, right now. I think the hormones are good for her. Her skin and coat are the best they've looked in ages. Of course, they don't call them bitches for no good reason, LOL.

Ewww, suddenly very glad to have a b!tch with a coat, who cleans herself all the time when she is in season.

Sorry to hear about the split cycle -- what a pain. That is my worst nightmare. Luna had a mild false pregnancy with her first season, and nothing after the second, so I do think that it's possible for the first ones to be a little different, since the hormones are just starting to flow and their bodies are working things out. Then again, Luna is my first intact dog, so Bonita and Gina and those folks know WAY more than I do. Smile

Yeah, this is my first intact dog, EVER. First season I've ever dealt with. All of my other dogs have been spayed from the get go. Emma Nems was spayed at 8 weeks! Of course, she's a little incontinent, and she grew funny. Ena seems to have stopped growing (which is great, because she's almost at the top of the standard). This is just silly, though. Every three months. Pfft!

My oldest girl had a split season her first time, and none after that. Chances are she will cycle normally after this.
