    What would Sam need?

    He's got a medium-short coat. Shed's medium-high.

    Any advice?

I'm not a groomer, but my suggestion would be a Zoom Groom.  Just about every place I've been to that sells pet supplies has them.  If you can't find one, head to a place that sells horse supplies and get a rubber curry comb.  They're pretty much the same thing.

    I have a rubber curry!

Zoom Groom's....are the teeth long on them, and they're soft rubber?

The short hair on a BC is called smooth or slick (or "bare" in Scotland and Northern England).  I've had dogs with coats as fine as a greyhound's and dogs as thick coated as a lab's.  Another good tool for these  coats is a combo comb.  I used a coarse/fine one daily to reduce the shedding in the house.  I used a medium/fine to help loosen dirt and dead hair before a bath..

It's amazing how many people think a short haired dog will shed less than a long haired.  Its the other way around usually, though.  Maggie's the worst, though - she's got  a coat that's somewhere between a husky and a corgi.
