    Shih Tzu's and Pom's

I've got a Shih Tzu / PomPom. His fur gets matted fairly easily behind his ears and but-area....right now he's shaved, but when his fur grows back out, what should I use? I'm not a fan of slicker brushes, everytime I use on a dog I feel like I'm scraping theyre skin.

Comb him out in those areas every other day, and you shouldn't have a problem. Brushing is great, and it feels good and removes undercoat. Use a pin brush for his coat, and a comb to remove and prevent tangles.

I use the same metal comb that my groomer uses. It's got wider teeth at one end and it works great. I think I got mine at Petsmart.

I wash both of my Shih Tzu's faces every morning, especially around their eyes, I just use a damp face cloth, then I run a pin brush over them , doesn't take but 2-3 minutes.  My dogs don't have tear stains or matts, I do keep their fur short though. I also do a quick ear check daily and comb the inside of their ears and especially right under the ear.

His muzzle, eye's and the top of his head have very sort Pom-like hair. Then around his ears it grows long. It's behind the ears that's his problem area, he gets little dred's

Those are commonly known around here as "love knots" LOL. It's where all the puppers LOVE to be scratched. You can thin it a bit with thinning shears, if regular combing isn't quite enough.

I have a Shih Tzu in full coat and I do all of her grooming, trimming. I  brush, then comb each day. Another key is a clean coat. I shampoo and condition her with Solid Gold products weekly.

I walk her daily and when we come home, I shampoo her feet. I rarely have a tangle.
