    Philodendron...

What are the effects on a dog that has ingested Heart Leaf Philodendron?

Here is what I found :

    • calcium oxalates are the primary toxic substance
    • symptoms (depending on quantity absorbed): pain & irritation in/around the mouth, excessive salivation, swollen tongue & throat, difficulties breathing, digestive upset, vomiting, renal failure

I would call an emergency vet if any swelling or trouble breathing appears. You can also call the ASCPA Poison Center (888-426-4435); there is a charge for the call. You could perhaps try to flush his mouth/throat with water to dissolve the oxalates. Good luck with your pupper. I hope his symptoms, if any,  will be mild and that he will feel better soon.

Thanks for that.  I'm such a DOINK.   I was in such a hurry, I didn't even spell it right.

None of those symptoms seem to match.  I 11mos old Pom has now (one a couple of weeks ago, and now today) had to onsets of gastrointestinal upset with signs of sedation.  The first time, he was vomiting and had liquid stools.  It all passed in a matter of 24hrs.  My vet did not think it was necessary to see him.  I gave an anti-diarrheal remedy and pedialyte (my vet said it probably was not necessary, but didn't hurt).  The vomiting was all water.   I held back food for a while and gave boiled chicken and rice.

He has refused food today, laps just a touch of water.  He has pee'd, but nothing excessive.  Still no vomiting, and since 1am, only three small bouts of runny stool.  However, he definitely acts "sedated".

There is nothing in the apt he could get into.  My senior Tzu is on meds, but they are hand given and nothing is EVER anywhere either of them could get.  I do have many flower gardens.   I have seen the Pom chew at a one plant, "Widow's Tears".  I have not researched it yet.  The only house plants I have are Philodendron and Snake Plant.
