For the experienced breeders on here,

what is in your whelping kits? And what is the one thing (or more :) ) that you can't do without? Were there things you bought that you never needed?

Did you buy your 'kit' as a kit, or did you buy the individual pieces? I'm looking at different sites for good quality items, and wondered if anyone had some reliable sites to recommend.

I'm doing my research before breeding Keela next year, and I'm curious as to what people on here (that I respect) have in their whelping kits.

I've got a stack of books to reread, lots of websites bookmarked to research again, and lots of questions for my breeder lined up. Keela has 2 more OFA's to pass: we'll get her eyes CERFed in October, and her hips/elbows done sometime between Oct. and Jan. I'm not worried about her hips though. She's passed her cardiac, thyroid, and patellas with ease. We are looking at a Feb/March breeding assuming the stud we are using is still available. Sizzle is getting on up there in years, so we are breeding next year instead of waiting. We had a long talk with her breeder while at Reliant, and we feel this is the right time. I'm actually getting excited, as this will be the start of my dream kennel: Stardancin' Miniature Pinschers. I can't wait to step into the Bred-by ring with my first puppy!!!!

I purchased a whelping kit and box from http://www.breederbase.com/. This had everything I needed and then some and the whelping box is great.

Bonita, don't feel like you have to answer this anytime soon. I know your heart is breaking right now.

Thank you Lindsay for the link. :)

All my supplies were purchased indivigualy. We have:

    - syptic powder
    - hemostats
    - dull edge scissors
    - stethoscope (I kid you not - got it for $6 @ www.kvpet.com)
    - thermometer
    - bandage tape
    - Nutri Cal (I'd be lost w/o this!)
    - baby ear irrigation buld (also a must have)
    - molasses (in case of hypoglycemic pups)
    - yarn
    - puppy scale
    - heating pad
    - humidifier (again, not kidding - in event of sick pups that need makeshift incubator)
    - clipboard w/ paper (to record birth weight, markings, etc.)
    - LOTS of washcloths/towels

I would have to say I couldn't do without the simplest items ... the hemostats, scissors, washcloths & that irrigation bulb has been a literal lifesaver in many instances! The Nutri Cal for the bitch is always on hand to give a boost between pups.

I bought everything I needed individually, it ended up being cheaper and I got better items I felt.

I have alot of the same things listed.  I included Bene-bact and unwaxed dental floss.  I also keep a supply of cotton balls, tissues, and unscented baby wipes around.  A box/laundry basket to keep the pups in while mom's whelping the next...
