    What Healthy Dogs Look Like...

We did this on another board I'm on and it's been a great reference, so I thought it might be fun to try it here.  The idea is to post pictures of dogs at healthy weights to be used as a reference for people with dogs that appear overweight or those with questions about what a healthy weight dog looks like.  Additional information on breed, age, size, etc. will also give people a bit more detail and guidance for their own animals' health.

If you're unsure if your dog is a healthy weight, use the guidelines on this site:  Body Condition Scoring in Dogs

With a picture of your dog from the top and side, include the following info:

    • Dog's Name
    • Breed or Mix
    • Age
    • Gender
    • Intact or Altered
    • Height at the shoulders in inches
    • Weight in pounds
    • Amount and kind of food your dog eats each day
    • Average amount of daily activity
Hope you all find this as fun an interesting as I do! Smile

Here are my girls.  For reference, Maggie is about a 4 on the scale in the link I posted, Ziva is about a 4.5 to 5 on the same scale.  I keep both dogs on the low end of normal because they both do agility and I want less force on their joints when jumping and sticking contacts. Smile  Vets are always impressed with the dogs' conditions and Maggie has very little arthritis, which also amazes vets when they find out how much jumping she does.

    Maggie

    Border Collie/Cattle Dog mix
    9 years old
    Spayed female
    33lbs, 19.5" at the shoulder
Currently eating Solid Gold Mmillenia with yogurt, fish oil, and Vitamin C added, 1.5 cups/day
Medium to low activity: two 30 min walks and wrestling with Z daily, hiking and agility work about once a week each.

    Ziva
    Corgi/Jack Russell/Border Collie mix (?)
    16 months
    Spayed female
    25lbs, 15.5-16" at the shoulder
Currently eating Solid Gold Mmillenia with yogurt and fish oil added, 1.5 cups/day
Medium activity: two 30 min walks, wrestling with Maggie, fetch and tug daily, rigorous hiking and agility training 2x's week

(yes she's wearing a shirt - they always say black makes you look thin ;) )

not top view, but it shows her waist and proportions decently :)

I'll play!  I have vet BC scores on my dogs because they were needed for their nutritional evaluations, so maybe it would be helpful to see what a dog looks like corresponding to the score a particular vet gives them.  (Our vets use the 9 pt. scale) Of course, my two are difficult to judge visually because of their fluffy coats.

    • Dog's Name  WOOBIE
    • Breed or Mix  Shepherd/Husky/BC/??? Mix
    • Age  22 mos.
    • Gender  Male
    • Intact or Altered  Altered
    • Height at the shoulders in inches 22 - 23 inches
    • Weight in pounds  38 lbs.  BC Score - 4
    • Amount and kind of food your dog eats each day  2 cups oatmeal, 2 cups pureed veggies, 14 ozs. canned salmon, 1/4 cup Fiber One cereal, supplements to balance everything
    • Average amount of daily activity - 1 to 1 1/2 hrs. brisk walking (approx. 5 miles) per day, 2+ hours frolicking in the lake chasing balls about 3x week, occasional visit to the dog park, running for about 2 hours (maybe 1x week this summer) Woobie is very lean, ribs easily palpable and all muscle, no extra fat anywhere.  It's hard to keep weight ON him because if he's not exercised, he doesn't eat and even with alot of exercise, he won't eat a big volume of food, so it's a dance with him.

    • Dog's Name  Indie - Before 10/07
    • Breed or Mix - Border Collie
    • Age 19 mos.
    • Gender Male
    • Intact or Altered Altered
    • Height at the shoulders in inches 26 inches
    • Weight in pounds 39 lbs.  BC Score - 1 Every bony protuberance was easily palpable, the two highlights you see near his rump are actually his hip bones sticking out badly.
    • Amount and kind of food your dog eats each day  2 cups brown rice, 2 cups pureed veggies, 20+ ozs. salmon, 1/4 cup Fiber One cereal, asst. supplements for joints and stomach
    • Average amount of daily activity - limited short, slow walks, physical hydrotherapy to regain metabolized muscle lost due to emaciation

    • Dog's Name  Indie - After 6/08
    • Breed or Mix - Border Collie
    • Age 27 mos.
    • Gender Male
    • Intact or Altered Altered
    • Height at the shoulders in inches 26 inches
    • Weight in pounds 63.5 lbs.  BC Score - 6  Vets had originally suggested 65 lbs as a target weight.  We're now scaling that back to about 55-58 lbs.  You have to push in to feel his ribs and there's a light cushioning over his body that really shouldn't be there, we overshot the mark just a bit.
    • Amount and kind of food your dog eats each day  1 3/4 cups oatmeal, 1 1/2 cups pureed veggies, 12 ozs. salmon, 1/4 cup Fiber One cereal, asst. supplements for joints and stomach
    • Average amount of daily activity 1 to 1 1/2 hour brisk walks, approx. 5 miles every day, resisting Mom's attempts to get him in the water and chasing Woobie in the backyard.  Occasional visits to dog park.

    • Dog's Name Cash
    • Breed or Mix Alaskan Malamute Mix
    • Age 7-9
    • Gender M
    • Intact or Altered N
    • Height at the shoulders in inches 22"
    • Weight in pounds 60+ (Has visibly gained weight and I haven't reweighed)
    • Amount and kind of food your dog eats each day  Normally 2 cups TOTW Bison + supplements. Recently on a diet down to 1.5 cups.
    • Average amount of daily activity 3 at least 30 minute walks. I have been lazy recently and cut the morning walk way short hence the weight gain. He isn't fat fat but has some padding that he didn't normally have. I can feel his ribs pretty easily but I do have to press in a bit so I'd call him a 5.5.

    • Breed or Mix Spaniely x (opinions are welcomed!)
    • Age 5
    • Gender F
    • Intact or Altered S
    • Height at the shoulders in inches 18.5"
    • Weight in pounds 38~
    • Amount and kind of food your dog eats each day  1/2 scant cup 2x a day.
    • Average amount of daily activity 3 at least 30 minute walks. Gets to run off leash on at least one walk; however, she doesn't run a lot due to joint issues. I can easily feel her ribs. She's "just right" for her. I'd call her a 5.

    • Dog's Name Soda
    • Breed or Mix Border Collie
    • Age 3
    • Gender F
    • Intact or Altered S
    • Height at the shoulders in inches 19"
    • Weight in pounds 35~
    • Amount and kind of food your dog eats each day  2 c total + supplements. When I got her she was kind of a fatty and needed to loose about 5 lbs so I put her on a diet and it worked and she lost a bit too much and got a little too thin so now she's gaining the weight back slowly and that's why she seems like she eats so much. Even with that amount of food, the weight gain has been slow. She's an active dog. I like how she feels right now so I may end up scaling her food back a bit soon. She's perfect right now at a 4.5. She was a 4.
    • Average amount of daily activity 3 at least 30 minute walks. At least an hour of aerobic activity (ball, frisbee, herding) a day plus tossing the ball or toy in the house for a bit.
