    Dog Shooter

So.... we have quite an acreage of property and quite a bit is invisible fenced off for Sabina. Well, I let her out for a while to do her business and such, she was probably out for no longer than 25mins, and all of a sudden I hear a crack (gun shot) and see my dog hobbling back towards the house. Some one shot my dog with a Beebee Gun! I don't who it was! She was on my property - on my land! My neighbor thinks someone mistook her for a coyote or something, but still!

Luckily the wounds aren't in a very serious spot...they're mostly in her rump and thigh area. Of course the vet office is closed now and there aren't any emergency clinics anywhere nearby so she will be taken in bright and earlier tomorrow morning. I gave her a bath, put betadine on her wounds and gave her some aspirin (I made she she wasn't bleeding anymore). She still seems very energetic - she's playing with the cat, eating food, etc, so I'm sure she'll be fine, but I still can't help worrying (I don't like the idea of lead in my dog's leg).

Is there anything else I can do right now for her?

I'm not sure how to approach this matter..since the dog is and was on my property are there legal actions that can be carried out, should I at least report this incident to our town board?

Please keep her in you thoughts.
     Thanks

Good grief!  Poor thing!  Dogs have a high tolerance for pain and if she is playing and eating and drinking...I'd just keep an eye on her and keep the wounds clean keep her from moving around a lot...might want to kennel her for the night.

I would definately report the incident.  I would be livid...and would have a few words with the neighbor...if you find out who did it.  Could have been an accident...but I'd still like a few words.  Angry

Sending lots of lead free healing energy to her.  Embarrassed

Unfortunately, this is one of my main complaints about invisible fences -- your dog is contained (sometimes to its detriment in 'getting away';) but predators have complete access to your property ... unfortunately, including the human variety of predator.

Man, I would be on the phone to the County Sheriff (if that's appropriate) AND I'd report it to any other governing agency.  Given the hour, the idea of it being an accident is pretty remote, particularly since she's on your property and I doubt it's a secret.

Neighbors can get ratty over small things -- barking, etc.  And then there's the idea of bored kids ...

Keep her absolutely as sedentary as possible -- even if you have to give her a Benedryl (1-2 mg/lb body weight) -- but NOT anything with Tylenol in it -- it is poison to dogs.

You don't want the lead to 'move' in the muscle and that can happen.  Definitely crate tonight and boy, I wouldn't be letting this dog out unchaperoned in the near future at all.

Poor Sabina!!  I am glad that she wasn't badly hurt and I hope she heals quickly!  For the time being I wouldn't let her out in the yard without a hunting vest or a bright red bandana.  I would also post no hunting signs on my property.

Frankly I would emphatically recount this incident to everyone that would listen - starting with the police.  You could have been with Sabina and gotten hit.

I would post signs offering a reward for information.  You may not get any info, but the culprit will probably hear about your efforts.

If you don't make a big fuss, whoever was careless enough to do this may hit a kid next time - and it might not be a BB gun.

Thank you all. We took her to the vet, The bullet/pellet appears to have gone cleanly through her leg, so there's no trace of any fragments. She had her rabies boosted just in case she was attacked by something as well and is on antibiotics. We were also given a special solution to clean her wounds out with. Overall, she acts like nothing happened. She's all hyper and happy, but boy, does she stay close to our house!

I did stop by at our Town Hall and reported the incident. I expressed my concern, not only for the safety of my dog, but for our other pets, family members, and neighbors. We're planning on building a barn out back so that we keep our horses on our property instead of boarding them and also expressed that I do not want people to get use to hunting on our property. We do have our land posted - no trespassing and no hunting, which makes the matter worse that they would choose to ignore those. Sad

She seems to be healing quickly - the swelling has gone down and the holes seems to be closing up fast.

Pictures (gun shot wound at about 2 days):

^^^ entry wound (pretty much closed up already)

^^^ exit wound (still a bit gross)

I think its sad that this happened to your pup! The K-9 cop for our borough lives on the next street over, just a few houses away from us and some kids one time thought it'd be funny to shoot his K-9 dog with a BB gun a bunch of times...poor dog.

We have a fenced in front yard, I hate it.  I want the back fenced in but our money situation is a bit tight, and DH thinks that's the last thing on our list of home improvements. I am always either out front with the dogs, or keeping a close eye on them from the living room window because I fear people coming by and trying something...

I would call the police, and like everyone said, tell everyone about it and keep a close eye out from now on.

Geez!  Are you kidding me??? Can you say "Assault On a Police Officer"???  That's really terrible!  Stupid kids!  When my stupid BIL bought my kid a BB gun against our wishes for Christmas, I warned my son if a BB ended up in a living creature, he could count on one ending up in the same place on his body.  The gun was conveniently "lost" on the way home.  Oops!  Stick out tongue

I'm glad to hear that Sabina is doing so well!

I can see the antibiotics, but I am puzzled how a BB wound translated into a possible rabid animal attack.  Confused  How long ago was her last rabies shot?

Have you gotten Sabina something bright colored to wear?  That might at least keep her from being mistaken for a coyote.

Fingers crossed that there will be no more trouble!!!

***Edited to change "rapid animal" to "rabid animal".  Stick tongue out

OMG, I'm so sorry this happened to your baby.  I cannot believe someone would shoot your dog even if they did think she was loose.

Janet they likely gave the rabies because since there is no foreign body in the leg, you do not have objective proof that it was that.  I mean what if someone was shooting at a coyote who was attacking her dog and those are puncture wounds.  Unlikely of course, but it's the safest thing.  As for the treatment of GSW, that is actually normal.  It's an old wives tale that you have to be still afterwards.  There is no danger of a missile, bb or 45 hurting anything after it's stationary.  Even if it moved around in your abdomen, it's not going to hurt anything so that treatment was abandoned many years ago.  If they are in the soft tissue they will be "purged" and come to the surface right under the skin after months.  I always like taking them out in clinic.  You just make a nick in the skin and squeeze them out like a metal zit.  It's kinda fun in a sick way.  The antibiotics acutally are not probably indicated, the bullet/bb is hot and kills bacteria so the literature actually supports just good cleaning of the wound and not using antibiotics as they have not really been shown to lessen wound infections after GSW.  I treat to many GSW of all types unfortunately :(  People like to shoot each other when it's hot.  At least it's a BB and the chance of a bb causing serious damange is rather low.

OK, but looking at the pictures I just don't see how there could be a bite wound like that without leaving marks from any other teeth.

Is the rate per day especially bad when it is hot and the moon is full?

P.S.  I looked it up.  GSW=Gun Shot Wound

I wish I was kidding!! I was so upset when I heard about it..the "highschool kids" around here are as spoiled as they come and the parents need to be the "cool" parents, and this police officer is known for putting an end to all their parties and fun so from what I gather a few of them that hated him for that did it.  The dog is alright thought, I just seen him outside the yard with their daughter the other day Smile

Ottoluv, I just realized that the tone of this question could have come across wrong.  Sad

My question was a serious one.  I was not questioning your statement that GSWs increase when it is hot.  I have heard police talk about an increase in strange behavior during a full moon and I do believe that it actually happens.

No, you are correct. The vet said that it mostly was a GSW, from a pointed pellet and it appeared to have gone straight through the leg. When they flushed the top wound, the liquid came right out through the other side, and it is doubted they any animal would have fangs that long. Plus, in most animal attacks, they usually go for the neck or face...it's odd that if she were bitten, it would only be on her thigh. The vet said that judging from the angle of the wounds, she was running away from them when they shot her. Her rabies vaccine was boosted only as precaution because she was outside and no one actually witnessed the "attack" or who/what the actual assaulter was, but also because she's due at the end of June, so they figured they would boost her now - pretty much the "rather be safe than sorry, plus since your here, so she might as well just get it now so you don't have to come back - kill 2 birds with one stone."

She is doing well. The swelling is pretty much gone and she doesn't seem to pay any attention to her "scabs". I did buy her a reflective collar with one of those blinking lights on it and mad sure she stays on our lawn, rather than going in our field. Whenever out, she has one of us out there with her at all times.

    Again, Thank you.

No, it's actually been shown in studies where they looked at the weather in los angeles county and the rates of GSW. When the weather is hot, the rates of penetrating injury goes up (stab wounds/GSW). There are lots of theories, but no one knows for sure why. And yes, the full moon does bring wierd stuff in too lol. I can't explain that one either!
