Groomer Has It

I don't like the time limit thing on this show.  I think (I could be wrong though) that in real world situations in a shop (not a mobile salon) if a dog is getting tense, there's an opportunity to give it a break and make the whole experience more positive.  If there's additional tension from the groomer because of a ticking clock, that's going to make the dog tense, and set things in motion for a bad result.  I don't think anyone would expect a groomer to have a perfectly groomed working Bearded Collie in the amount of time they were given.  I just saw the show with the Chows last night and I was shocked at Kathleen's reaction also.  Not what I expected for someone with so much experience!

Wha-? How are Golden Retreivers western? If Jessica wanted a western dog I saw an Australian Shep in the background she could have used, any herding breed would have been more western then a retreiver. lol

The time limits are very realistic. Groomers must have dogs (despite temperament flaws and the stress of being groomed) finished by the time their owners come for them, period. Working in a chain pet store's grooming salon for a year made me super fast. I got a group of 2-3 at a time, with a 3 hour time out on all of them. That's an hour per dog, and I often took OTHER people's dogs (grooming 9-10 dogs in an 8 hour period). If you've been grooming for as long as these folks have, you'll be quick. I've only been grooming for 4 years. I've learned a lot about the quickest way to get a dog clean and dried, and when is the best time to brush it out, and what product will remove mats without making the coat greasy, etc.

In Jessica's defense, I thought the dog was cute. But the judges were right in the fact that thier wasn't much she can do with the coat. A golden's coat is about as natural as they get. Maybe I'm just prejudice because I love goldens\ so much but I thought hers was the best.

I absolutely HATED the fact that they were dying the coats! It's just not right. When Jose kept calling his dog and his dog kept getting up I wanted to shake the TV and inform him that he wasn't helping! I also think Artist had a lot of potential that he could have worked with. (the R&R) scene had a lot of props that he didn't even consider. I think he (Artist) is going to win!

I didn't know that about the tight scheduling in grooming shops.  The place I used to take my airedale always just had him for the day and then would call me when he was ready.  If it took a few hours or all day, it was fine with me, they said sometimes dogs needed extra time and lots of breaks and they'd rather do it stress free than rush and make it unpleasant for the dog.  I sometimes saw them doing just a paw at a time clipping nails and then would treat and play with the dog or crate them and let them destress a little before the next session.

I could see the point the judges made about it being a grooming magazine and they should have chosen dogs that actually needed some grooming and not just a wash and brush out.  I did think the pics of the golden were very cute.  Artist could have totally sold the Janis Joplin angle on that dog (if he even knew who she was! LOL! he's too young!) and maybe put a few braids and beads in her long ear fur.  I'd like to see him win because of his personal circumstances and his willing to persevere and take their feedback and use it to come back strong without a chip on his shoulder and a positive attitude, I really love him!  :)

Hehe Im kinda rooting for Artist, too. I think him and Jorge have the best chances of winning.

I didnt have a problem with the dog(Heck I own a Retreiver), I just dont like Jessica. XP Something about watching her on the first episode rubbed me the wrong way.

I cant wait till next episode, it looks so funny.

I gotta tell you, none of those dogs with the dyed coats impressed me.  And, the Golden - as soon as she picked that dog, I thought, they're going to crucify her for picking an easy groom.  My favorite was actually the Cocker, and I disagreed with the comment (was it Jonathan) about them being bad on the table.  I always loved grooming the Cockers - they were my faves, especially the ones in long coat that I could do those great feet on.  (I learned to do a mean Cocker foot one year at the NEPGP conference by watching Denise King).  I can't wait to see the episode with the pet psychic LOL.

Anyway, jennie, you've been grooming the same amount of time as Artist - maybe you could apply for next season....Big Smile

not just psychics...but WESTIES!!!!  a room FULL of them!

    • Gold Top Dog

No, thank you, LOL. I'm not up for leaving my happy place to live in a houseful of catty groomers, without my dog! LOL

I'm excited to see what they do with the Westies, and what the psychic has to say. Should be highly amusing, if nothing else.

I just found this thread! I catch the show when I can, usually catch it on a re-run. I knew as soon as Jessica picked the Golden she was going to go home, especially since they knew what dogs looked like to get on the cover of that magazine. I don't think any of them should've gotten on the cover, Kathleen was the only one that was semi-creative with her dog so of course they picked hers.

I am glad Artist took a challenge and groomed the Briard...I really am pulling for him to win!!

Jenny, you can watch missed episodes online, it's a nice option for when you can't catch them on tv.

Thanks BC, I never even think to watch episodes online...I always forget when a new one is on and miss them and just catch them during the week when they are re-run ...Big Smile

Hy Jenny, welcome to the thred!

Does anyone actually believe in the dog phsyics? I'm really not sure wheather I believe or not. This upcomming episode should be good.

    • Gold Top Dog

I don't, but I also have a hard time believing any psychics, for humans or animals....

Cute pet grooms aren't what ends up on groomer to groomer's cover. Often the cover dog is a creative grooming contest winner. IMO none of the groomers did a great job on that challenge, as I think the idea was creative grooming and some just did pet grooms. The ones who did creative grooming, only the winner IMO did a good job. The ones who used color just seemed used it randomly and it didn't look good. Here are some examples of good crative grooming:
