    Positive Vibes for Coke, please!

We rushed Coke off to the vet tonight but we're still not exactly sure what is wrong.  On April 4 I left for a week long trip in Florida, DH caring for the animals.  He said all week Coke had diarrhea off and on.  Once he pooped in the house and once in his crate while DH had to leave to take a certification test.  When I got home, he didn't poop for over a day.  That was this morning yet so I went home at lunch.  He seemed fine and he pooped a normal poop for me.  DH came home 4 hours later and Coke had pooped diarrhea twice in his crate and was very upset, frothing at the mouth.  We thought maybe he has whips since a month ago we helped a rescue pull a dog from a shelter and she was positive for whips.  I gave both my dogs Interceptor that day and again on Sunday night.  I called the vet immediately when I got home and they got us in.  I took in two fecal samples for a float but it was negative for anything.  The vet asked about food and I said I had accidentally changed their formula about 2.5 weeks ago.  They eat Canidae and were on the Lamb and Rice, but I bought a bag of Canidae ALS b/c I thought that's what they were on.  The vet gave us medicine, something starting with M and he has to take it twice a day for a week and eat boiled ground beef and white rice for three days.  I'm glad it's not whips but I wish I knew exactly what it was.  We stopped at the pet store on the way home and I got a new bag of Canidae Lamb and Rice.  There was a guy at the store that actually knew what he was talking about (I hope) and he said most dogs are sensitive to turkey but lamb is easier for them.  Sure enough, Canidae ALS contains turkey as the second ingredient.  I was considering trying California Natural b/c it's a very simple food but the guy convinced me to give the Canidae Lamb and Rice another try after the bland elim diet.  Today I've only fed Coke about 1.5 cups of the bland mix plus his pill.  I hope it works b/c I feel terrible he's pooping all over himself and the crate.  We considered keeping him in the basement, but I'd have to move all the cat stuff and decided against it b/c there's too many bad things down there he could ingest (namely our sump pump which is now at the ground level mark and contains a gross black liquid, also all my cleaning supplies, cat food, cat litter...).

I hope Coke feels better tomorrow.  I'll try to sneak home mid-afternoon since he was fine over lunch but messed himself between noon - 4pm....I also feel bad keeping him in that crate when he's sick, but I was convinced it was whips and it would be dangerous to have his feces in the carpet around the house since whip eggs are nearly impossible to kill.  He needs to be crated to keep it contained in case it is a parasitic infection.

Aw. poor Coke! I'm so sorry! I hope he gets better REALLY soon!

This reminded me of the Canidae thread I just posted. You saw it... I don't know. If Kenya is doing ok, I wouldn't think it was the food except for an allergy or something.

Does Coke normally have a sensitive stomach like that - which is why he's on lamb and rice?

I hope Coke feels better soon!  Poor kiddo.

Both my dogs were originally on Nature's Variety.  Kenya was still eating that when we got Coke, so we stuck with that for a while b/c that's what Coke was on in his foster house.  We used several "flavors" of NV with no problems (chicken, beef, venison, lamb, and salmon).  I decided to try Canidae b/c it seems about the same quality as the Prairie but way cheaper.  I *thought* I had them on ALS, but I realized later it was Lamb and Rice b/c I bought a bag of ALS when the first ran out and realized the bag was not the same colors.  I figured it wouldn't matter since it's the same brand.  So, Coke was always doing fine on the Lamb and Rice though I didn't pay attention to the ingredients or choose that specifically.  In the past he has had a few short bouts of diarrhea.  We've done the bland diet thing before.  We were more concerned this time being that Mandy tested positive for whips and she did poop on my rug and in several places in the yard.  Now we are wondering if Coke is really sensitive to turkey.  The salesguy at the store said a lot of dogs are.  I don't think it's chicken b/c before they ate NV chicken and rice with no problems.  I checked the ALS bag and turkey meal is the second ingredient.  Phil also said that he thinks in the past he's shared some turkey lunch meat as a treat and Coke sometimes gets a runny poo when we give him treats like that.  I don't know if it's an allergy or just that he has a more sensitive stomach and can't stomach the turkey or whatever it is.  We are feeding him white rice and boiled ground beef for a few days and then will start him back on Canidae Lamb and Rice.

I hope Coke starts to feel better soon and I hope it was just a sensitivity to the turkey. Ares can't eat turkey either, and he used to get bouts of nasty diarrhea from his food sensitivities, so it very much could be.

The metranydazole (Flagyl) that the vet has him on SHOULD help and should help fast.  If it doesn't, I would call and let the vet know.  It's essentially an antibiotic/anti-parasitic/anti-inflammatory in one pill.  Usually it helps pretty much right away, but if it doesn't the vet needs to know that (b/c it may be something it doesn't 'touch';).

Good luck -- it's a stressful situation for all.  I'm so sorry.

Liesje I hope Coke feels better real soon. We used to have big diahreah problems with my old lab every spring. It was awful for a few days then she would be fine. We never did figure out why. Let us know how Coke is doing.

Oh good.  He had one last night and one this morning. Hopefully this will not be the fourth day in a row we come home to a huge disgusting mess!   I put him in his crate this morning and felt bad but he went in on his own and didn't seem to care.  I've been having to bleach it out constantly.
