Most gentle way to get an mat out from "down there"

Thinning shears are a good way to get mats out.  A couple of snips underneath the mat will usually loosen it up without removing all the hair, but please be careful considering the area!!!!

 Probably any groomer would do it for $5. I offer it for $12 with a nail trim. You shave the genital area, and around the anus, with a #10 blade. It keeps potties from sticking to the hair, and those evil "baby mats" from forming. Those little pin mats are a very common problem, in that area.

Hmm well I don't want to lose his fluffy butt pantaloons, it's just the under area that gets those pin mats. I'll call a groomer and see what they say. 

You wouldn't lose the fluffybutt, LOL. It's typically *just* the hair right under the tail (or nubbie, in his case). You don't have to have anything done around his behind, though. I'm sure they'd just shave his pee pee/inside of leg area, for you.

Agreed.  Thinning shears would be fine for carefully removing mats (I would put a comb between the skin and the mat, for safety reaons), but it would be better to prevent it by clipping the sanitary area short.

I'd go with thinning shears, and then daily combing or brushing. For the one intact male dog i had here briefly, I used a baby size pin brush, and very gently groomed that area every morning, which kept his coat flowing.

I brush Luna while she is eating her breakfast, so she is occupied and she could care less about being brushed/combed. You could also put some peanut butter on the floor for the initial "treatment" so he is busy eating that up while you get things straighten out.

Also, sort of OT, but Aussie grooming related: I just bought a #80 Resco comb in Medium and can't believe how much it rocks! It takes out all sorts of dead undercoat, and makes it really easy to keep Luna mat free, even when she gets disgusting on a daily/hourly basis. If I could only have one grooming tool, I think it would be this comb.

ALL of my dogs get this clip...esp Cleo, I do mine myself. It is very simple to do with a biddable dog or a grooming table or both. It helps IMMENSELY!

ETA: WOW.....do note the "I do mine myself" meant I do my DOGS clip there myself LOL...wow read that wrong and erm...yeah...nevermind.

I do sanitary clips on mine too.  I have to be very careful not to take the furnishings off the back legs(pantaloons) since I show mine.  If done right, you can't even tell it was done.  I try to keep the underside on the boys done at all times because it gets gross.  Their hair doesn't mat, but they get urine and other gross stuff down there since they are both intact...hmm...another reason I think I like girls better!

I asked in another thread but this thread is more appropriate. Where would one find this resco comb? online?

 I got mine from Cherrybrook. I looked and idog doesn't sell it. It's the #80 Resco comb in Medium.

ETA: Seriously, I love this thing. I want to carry it with me wherever I go. LOL

The reason I suggested a groomer is because it's quick and easy, buuuut those parts are sensitive. It's very easy to knick a sanitary or irriate it.
