    Blow Dryer for a novice

I'm thinking of taking on another side project so I can save for a dog blow dryer.  I'm looking into the future (the summer) and have a mental picture of Coke swimming in the lake with us several times a day.  I don't know what mix Coke is, but his coat is longer and sleek like a Collie, but very dense/thick underneath like a Husky.  Kenya is a double-coated GSD but has a short tight coat.  She will air dry eventually, but Coke...I don't think he will ever dry for the two weeks at the lake!  So I'm thinking of getting a proper dryer for him in case he doesn't dry in the sun and also so I can stop paying $10 to use the bathing station at Chow Hound every time he gets into something.  Last night he was sick in his crate and sat in the mess.  We rinsed just the gross area but I think he is still partly wet!

Any suggestions?  Can I get something discounted from eBay/Amazon?

For a thick double coat like that, you'll be happiest with a good quality pet dryer. I have an Air Force Commander ($120ish from Pet Edge) and love it. There's a Metro Pet Dryer that looksl ike a dog house that has been discontinued but may be findable on Amazon or Ebay that works okay on a double coat, but I'd look at the Air Force or the low-ened Challangair. If you could swing it, though, the K9 II is wonderful.

I have a commander too and have for about 8 years.  Great product.  Also, you can get replacement parts for things that could wear out.  And they are a product made in the USA.

I have a K9 II - got it from a groomer that I used to take Dakota to. I just called them up and asked if they had any used dryers that they would be willing to sell. They did, and I bought it. It's been a really good investment.

I have a Metro that's the orange canister one...it dries Cleo very well in about 45-mins. Well enough that I don't have to worry about hot spots...which would be a concern with your boy too.

Just out of curiosity, is there some reason why you should not blow dry them with a human blow dryer.  Sally is the only one I bath at home and we have always just used mine on her and she has never seemed bothered.

There are those that claim that drying a dog with a warm or hot hair drier tends to dry out their coat and skin.  Also there is a serious difference in the volume of air that the dog driers put out.  Mine can double as a leaf blower.  In fact I have used it to sweep out the garage floor.  Did a great job.

The ones I use at the bath station are VERY powerful. It blows the water off the dog, rather than actually drying it.  If I used my dryer on him, it would take hours, I would not be blowing out any coat, and he'd probably get burned.

Yeah, it's kind of sticky, becuase you really need HEAT to straighten curly coats.  A force dryer will do a lot of straightening, but not as much a stand dryer with a heating element.  So, you kind of need both for those types of coats.

Well that's good to read, I thought I'd have to save like $300 or more.
