    Dogs won't stop scratching

Dogs are all on Frontline Plus I have checked them for fleas they have none a few months ago I even took Lucky to the vet about the scratching and vet checked for fleas and said whatever your using on her is working but the dogs continue to scratch which I know must be annoying to them since it is to me, they eat dry food which is Pro Plan they were eating Pedigree so I changed it they been on Pro Plan for 2 months vet said to wash the dogs with Oatmeal & Aloe Shampoo which I am doing but they just keep scratching should I change the flea meds? Change their food again??? Another thing is they are out alot could be just bugs biting them? Mosquitoes are bad this year, what could I use for that?? If I change their dog food what kind should I get??? Any help thanks

It's probably not fleas, but I use garlic to keep the mosquitoes away. I feed them about a clove every day.

It could be allergies. I would change their food to something without corn. You can use this site for looking at ingredients. There's a lot of stuff in food that could cause allergies. I use Canidae, a 5 star food.

It could be dry skin. You can also try giving them more oil in their diet. I use Fish capsules, a can of sardines or salmon. I give the fish caps every day unless I give them a can of sardines or fish steaks.

Could be the food.  I'm going through the same thing with Caleb (plus gunky ears and ear infections).  I was able to pinpoint it to beef.  What I found weird, was that he was itchy even on Pro Plan Selects, which doesn't have beef.  However, it does have animal fat.  He's been off the PP Selects for a month now- nice pink ears, and the scratching has subsided.  Oh- frequent bathing, even with "special" shampoos, will remove the oils from the skin, which can make 'em itch.  :)

I was going to say allergies ,too, but how can all of the dogs all of a sudden have an allergy?Unless some sort of chemical or something in the food . Something in the Frontline causing dryness or burning?  Confused

Forgot to say---We use Vectra  3D.  It repels fleas, ticks and mosquitoes!   So far, it's helped the itchies with Maizy, especially.

Luke did fine on ProPlan for something like two years and then one day out of the blue he started itching pretty bad.  He had dry, flakey skin and just looked dull.

That's when I made the switch to Innova Evo.  Within a couple of weeks the itching stopped completely.  After a couple of months he had a gorgeous, slick coat.

I can't explain why he suddenly started reacting to the ProPlan after doing "fine" for so long, but he did.

I'd wager that its nutritional based.  If you don't want to change foods...try the fish oils or maybe even flaxseed oil (can be a bit pricey, though).  Avon's Skin So Soft (diluted in water and applied with a spray bottle) can be good for both repelling mosquitos and combats dry skin (gotta rub it in so it reaches the skin).  Makes'em smell good too.  Smile

Only problem with that is you aren't addressing what's causing the the scratching.  Kind of like you know you get poison ivy, but go in it anyway because the calamine lotion will stop the itching.  But, the fish oils sure will help!  Smile

Only if it doesn't bring on a migraine!  LOL

I had KayCee, my almost 9 year old golden retriever in for ear infection two weeks ago, and then last week again for scratching and chewing herself raw on her lower back.  But this happenes at this time EVERY YEAR.  She is allergic to Live Oak Pllen and my vet now thinks we can add pine pollen .  And everything around here  is YELLOW will pollen--my bluer car has yellow roof, hood, and trunk.  My white fence around my flower bed is yellow, the sidewalk is yellow!    Never seen it as bad as this year.
