Possible Frontline Plus Issue

    Possible Frontline Plus Issue

I've used Frontline Plus on my girls since they've been old enough and have had no issues, it's been pretty effective overall. About 3 months ago I applied it as usual and everything seemed fine. I don't even really know how long after, but I noticed a scab between Abbie's shoulder blades about the size of a nickel. When I apply it I begin just above the shoulder blade, parting the hair so it gets down onto the skin and I distribute it down their backs to where their tails start. So I never put the entire application between the shoulder blades. I watched the scab expecting it to fall off and it just stayed and stayed. Finally it started to slowly come off. She didn't seem bothered by it at all. As the scab fell away I noticed that the skin in that area was black.....not normal for her. She has the usual freckly areas, like dogs do, but this area of skin was black and feels hard under the surface, almost like a lump. I've been watching it and now, in the middle of the black area is a new very hard pointy area that seems to be coming out of her skin, right in the middle of the black skin area, where the previous scab had been. Has anyone else heard of or experienced such a thing???? I am really starting to worry. Initially I just thought she had a local reaction to that particular application, but this is going on far too long. I will take her to the vet, but in the meantime I'm seeking any info I can. Thanks.

I really have no idea but the first thought that came to me is that it may be a bot fly larvae. I kind of doubt it's related to Frontline. If it is a fly larvae, the vet should be able to remove it, no problem. I've taken 2 out of my dogs.

Yikes! While I've never had anything like that happen to any of the dogs, a few years back, I bought Frontline Plus from my Vet. We had a bad flea infestation from a rescued Rottie who was just loaded with them ... Anyway, the second I applied it to my then 6 month old pup, her skin was burned SEVERELY! She yelped the moment it touched her, and she was beet red all over, from her stomach to the application spot! The other dogs did not have a reaction, however, it did absolutely nothing for the fleas :( The next month I used Bio Spot, which worked like a charm & did not bother any of the dogs, including the pup that was burned by the Frontline. And completely destroyed the flea population!
Now I just use a product called Bug Off Garlic for me and the dogs and never have problems with fleas/ticks/mosquitoes, etc. www.springtime.com

It's not unheard of to have bad reactions to anythig topical *but* a) you've used it for a long time and b) you didn't apply it all in that spot.

My first thot also was bot fly larvae (soooo gross) -- I'd have the vet look at it a.s.a.p --that's typically what it looks like I think.  But vet for sure - too scarey.

    Nasty little buggers.  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bot_fly

These are pretty common around horses.  They lay their eggs on the legs usually, and you have to scrape them off with a special tool called a bot knife.  Since horses have thicker skin, the larvae usually infect them internally (when the horses lick their legs and ingest the eggs).  But, in high school I worked an internship at the Duke University Primate Center, and did a study on testing out deworming meds on the lemurs.  The larvae would burrow into their skin, very similarly I imagine to how they infect dogs.  So gross!!!

Wow, my stomach is so upset right now!!!! I am leaving to go check her out in the daylight where I can get a really good look at it. I also did an online search and found some pics and some videos on YouTube that actually show botfly's being removed from people. I can't tell if it looks like that's what she has, but I can't wait to get home!!!! I called her vet and they have dealt with this before - there is NO WAY I can remove it myself, it is totally GROSS!!!!! I really, really, hope that is not what it is!!! I'm kind of surprised my groomer never mentioned it. They go every week. OMG, I am totally freaking out right now!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Don't freak out!!  Your vet will make sure your little girl is okay. Smile

For horses, ivermectin dewormer helps control bots.  Ivermectin is what Heartgard is, right?

Don't freak out. There's no reason to. Smile It's gross, yes, but so are several things having to do with dogs. Wink

Your vet will take care of it and it will be over. You should actually hope that IS what it is, because other possibilities might not be so benign.

I live in the country and although we don't have horses, Cara has gotten 2 botfly larvae. One in her chest and one right on top of her back. And I removed them both. It was GROSS! I can't believe I did it. But that's my baby they're messing with, right?

The sooner you get it taken care of, the better, though, because if it is a bot fly, it's growing.

Let us know what the vet says, okay?

It might just be a tick.  And, not to be off topic but you really shouldn't apply the Frontline down the back like that--it's not meant to be applied that way.

I guess I just have a really queasy stomach with stuff like that and after seeing the videos I seriously had an upset stomach. Can't help it. So.....when I went home I looked at the area out in the sunlight and it appeared that there was something coming out of the middle, and it very well could've been the end of a larvae, so, of course, I panicked. After a few minutes and more investigating, I used my fingernail and it turned out to be a small scab sticking up and it came right off. It was immediately apparent to me that there was no opening in her skin. I moved the area around and the skin there does feel thicker than other areas. I was immediately relieved. BYW, I had called her vet who couldn't get her in, then called a couple of my friend's vets and no luck. So, I am going to have to take her in tomorrow. In the meantime I put some antibacterial cream on the spot and see what the vet says . I did take a couple of pictures of the area before all of this and will try to post the best one.

There are just certain things that some of us should NOT have to do -- I can clean anal glands, I can do minor surgery, I can clean up puke and tons of things but PUH-LEEEESE don't make me cut dog toenails.

WHY am I such a freakin wuss about it?  Dunno -- but it makes me queasy to the bottom of my toes.  And a bot fly would likely make *me* angry rather than queasy-- how dare the darned thing attack MY baby!!

AllI mean is I don't blame you for reacting the way you did -- there are certain things that yank all our chains and that and tape worm larvae are about the two most majorly 'gross' things I can think of.  And in the realm of 'dangerous' stuff they're both high on the 'gross' meter but lower on the 'danger' meter.

I'm glad you *grin* "confronted it" and found out it was not something heinous like that -- but I'm also really glad you're going to stand your ground and get the dog in,.  I don't like the sound of it ... I can tell you things I might DO, but frankly I'd a whole lot rather you'd have a vet take a look/see FIRST.  Simply cos sometimes little things like that can be 'bad'  and it's way better to have a vet see it.

If you strizzle the Frontline down the back *I* would think it would have made a sore anywhere it touched rather than one in just one spot.  (and *I* apply Frontline that way b/c it's the way *my* vet said to do it).

Pretty please let us know what the vet says??  Good luck!

LOL I can do it all except for the anal glands! And the bot fly made me angry, too! How dare that critter!

I don't blame you, either, Sunshinegirl. Some things just get to us.  Smile

    Hope Abbie's doing all right.

Okay, so the vet said it looks like an allergic reaction to a tick bite and gave me some cream to apply until it's cleared up. Even though the girls are on Frontline Plus and have been since they were old enough, I have found a tick on Layla on 2 seperate occasions (never Abbie), before they had a chance to gorge themselves. The vet said the tick probably did it's thing and fell off (hopefully not in my house!!! ) and that it does sometimes happen, but the tick would die from the Frontline. He said to keep a close eye on her.

Yay, I'm so glad your little girl is okay now!  And I'm also glad you didn't have to deal with an icky bot larvae. Ick!
