Do I have to get her tail removed?

Do I have to get her tail removed?

Since Rory was a teenager I've been batteling with her whip of a tail. She wags so hard she busts it open on things frequently. It is usually just a cut or slit but this time it is far worse. The last inch or so of her tail is completely void of any hair or skin, it looks like a big scabby bloody mess. This morning she wacked it on a metal cart in the kitchen so I went through the motions and put peroxide on it and then Yannan Pao powder which is a chinese version of styptic powder that stops the bleeding. However this mroning was the first time I could tell it really pained her.

In the past we have wrapped it up with gauze, tied her tail to her leg, taped it up, and any other thing we could think of but this is ridiculous. I took some pics, they didnt come out very well........any clues? I really dont want to have her tail removed it would break my heart........

ay ay ay...that looks painful. If it's never fully healing...

Have you done the hair roller/wrap thing? Dane people swear by that.

    Thanks RW!

I havnt heard of the hair/wrapper thing, I will try and google it but do you have tips of where I might be able to look it up? I have been successful in healing it up a couple of times and months will go by without her busting it open, its not always in the same spot and I've noticed when its farther up on her tail its easier to heal but down at the tip its just so vulnerable. When its farther up on her tail its usually a slit and I can put neosporin on it, squeeze it together and wrap her up but this bloody mess is awful =(

Oh my crazy girl, lol! She is taped up real nice for now but this has gotta stop.

Don't quote me BUT....you wrap the tail as per normal for a wound...you slide a soft curler/roller onto it...covering your wrap....then you vetwrap that onto the tail.

You'd need to undo the whole kit n kaboodle to see to the wound of course...but even after it's healed the roller provides a "bumper" if you will against new injuries.

Oh that makes sense.....its a better solution then wrapping bubble wrap around her tail like DH suggested, LOL! That could help heal and prevent other injuries.

I posted this topic on a different forum as well and they suggested Nu-stock. They person who suggested it said their dog had "happy tail" so bad you could almost see the bone and this stuff supposedly worked wonders. Have you heard of it? I found the website nustock.com but the description dosnt seem like it would be strong enough.

Nope never heard of it! Hopefully something can be found that works tho.

    ow ow ow!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Goodness gracious that looks awful.  I don't have any suggestions just a I hear ya on the not wanting to lose her tail.  My understanding is that if they did something in her case it would be to just take that last bit off, not a full docking.

I will be sending some tail healing vibes your way!  I hope you find something that heals it up and it STAYS healed.

As you may recall we have had our tail issues and they are just awful.

Aurora you and Bugs need to slow down your wagging kids!

Crusher says he would be happy to come over and show Rory and Bugsy how to wag so your tail don't get hurt.

Sure, I bet Crusher has a more cushioned tail with all that fur!

Ouch looks very painful and I can only symapthize with the mess it must create!!  In Ridgebacks we use a tail sling. Rather than taping it to the leg.  You create a haness that wraps the tail then goes around the body to pull the tail up and out of the way. It has done wonders for many friend's dogs. Best of luck on your baby girl... ps one of our pups was bitten by either a snake or spider and the tail became necrotic. He sports a little rottie style nub now and it wags fiercely !!

Well, that and it just sort of loftily fans over his back in a dreamlike state.

I'm sorry I don't have any suggestions. The roller thing sounds good tho. I just wanted to thank you and your DH for a good laugh! I needed that.

The tail looks bad.  I'm happy that my dog was docked at birth even though she's not a full breed.  We go biking almost every day and if she had her long tail it would have been cut off by the bike wheel spokes for sure.  I like the look of full length tails but sometimes they're just not practical.

Thanks everyone! I got some stuff reccomeneded for horse wounds called Nu-Stock. It has sulfur, pine tree oil and some other good stuff in it and has worked wonders. The actual wound has healed but is a bit raw so we are making progress. I'm going to look into that tail sling....i think that would help the final healing stage so she wont lick it. Thanks so much everyone!
