Bailey is in trouble

    Bailey is in trouble

Some of you know Bailey was my heart dog. My son came home to live with us for a short period of time several years ago, the two became inseparable, and when my son bought a house, he said he was taking Bailey with him. I said no he wasn't. My son left a note the day after he moved, saying Bailey had gone to his house for a visit. I drove to his house, and Bailey could tell i was there to take him home. I never saw anything like it. I asked him if he wanted to go for a ride and get some treats. He turned and ran behind my son. There was no doubt what he wanted. He has lived there ever since. He turned 10 two weeks ago, but still looks, and acts, like a two year old puppy.

Two or three weeks ago my son said he took Bailey to the vet because he was making funny sounds (like dry heaves). The vet didn't find anything wrong. Then he brought him back because he seemed to have trouble eating and didn't want you looking in his mouth. The vet thought he had an infection and put him on antibiotics (last week). He stopped eating on Sunday. My son brought him back to the vet this morning. They said it looked like he had two abcessed teeth and they needed to be pulled. He could pick him Bailey up at 5.

Shortly after 5 tonight my son called (sobbing). They had just told him Bailey had cancerous tumors in his mouth, and that they had removed four teeth. They also said the cancer was through all his bones, and that my son would have to make a decision to put him down or maybe give him radiation treatments. He knows nothing else at this point. I wonder how they could make that determination so fast. He can pick Bailey up tomorrow.

Has anyone else experienced this or know what the best course of action may be?

I'm sorry, I have no idea, but I'm so sorry for you and your son and Bailey. Our best wishes to all of you.

It depends on the type of cancer ... in any event, a cancer diet may give him the best quality of life even short-term.  (carbs 'feed' cancer and make it grow so a grain-free diet high in anti-oxidants can help keep things level and not advancing as fast as they otherwise might).

It's such a shame ... my thots and prayers for you.  Holler if I can help in any way.

    Thank you.

I'm late seeing this thread, Yanke, but I wanted to offer good vibes to Bailey, your son, and the rest of your family.  I wish I had something helpful to offer.  It's heartbreaking to have a dog seem fine one day and the next to be faced with a horrible diagnosis and decision.  The only suggestion is to perhaps get a second opinion, just in case.  It's so upsetting when I stop and think about how many people I know whose dogs have been diagnosed with cancer.  I'm so sorry - I'll keep all of you in my thoughts.

He seems to be doing pretty well.  He's eating like a horse, and his toys are all over the place.    The Dr.said it could be five weeks or five months.

I'm just seeing this Yankee and I am so sorry. I remember the Bailey stories. Sending my thoughts to you and your family.

I see that you are in CT, and I wonder if your son would consider taking him to an oncologist.  There is a wonderful one in Norwalk.  My Tashmoo had cancer, but it took quite a bit of testing and surgery to determine what stage, etc...., then after all was said and done we did a bone marrow test to see if it had spread.  They give chemo treatments at this vets also.  Please let me know if you would like his name and info.  I wish you the best and hope that something can be done for sweet Bailey.
