artificial insemination

    artificial insemination

Has anyone here tried artificial insemination with the use of fresh chilled/ frozen semen? I am planning to use a dog overseas(there in the u.s. /canada) and would rather have the dogs semen shipped in my country than my bitch shipped  (costs more w/ lodging fee & adds more stress to the bitch). I'm researching the procedure and how do  I register the puppies in my country  ?:)

    Any tips/ advices?
    Thanks in advance guys!

wish I had some but nope. I DO know you need a GOOD repro vet to do the procedure tho so doubtless when you find them...they can give you TONS of input on the procedure itself.

I know plenty of people who've done it successfully...but it all starts with the right repro vet.

Definitely find a good vet, otherwise you'll just be wasting your money.  You'll need to get a vaginal cytology done to know exactly when to AI the bitch, and you'll need to either have the vet do the AI or have them show you.

thanks for the advice guys!:) oh, dang it.. i dont know any good repro vets!! your right i should be looking for one, it's so hard to look for one here in our country... i dont think breeders here have done this? i dont know why but it's easier and more convenient for both stud owner and bitch owner :) rather than having the bitch shipped and lodged.

anyway guys, you're right i really need a good vet or else it will be big money down the drain! my current vet said he doesnt know the procedure in dogs and he doesnt know anyone who has done this sucessfully here in the country. so what do you guys think should it be frozen or fresh chilled semen? it is a good 13 hours flight from the states to the philippines :)

Hmm...I'm not sure what I would do if I couldn't find a good vet to do it.  I'd suggest chilled semen, although I'm not super sure.  Frozen semen has been pretty successful, but if you'll be doing this yourself, I'm sure chilled would be much easier to handle, and the sperm stays alive for much longer after insemination than the frozen does.  Check out this article...it doesn't go way into depth like you'll need, but it does give a pretty thorough overview.  I'd do a search for AI and, if you are going to have to do this yourself, I'd probably look into buying a video showing the process.  You'll also need to just watch your bitch very carefully for the right time to inseminate.  Hope everything works out for you!  Just out of curiousity, what breed is your dog?

AI is IME and from everything I heard, much less likely to produce a litter. The top reproduction vet in the country is right near where I live and even using him, regular AIs seem hit or miss. Surgical AIs seem to be a better way to go but you really NEED a reproduction vet to do it.

There are some boards with people that have experience doing just what you're planning.  PM me and I can give you a link.

If you do what the experts recommend and really track that progesterone and are using good quality semen on a bitch who is proven to produce a litter, the chances by doing a surgical a.i. are quite good.  I am actually expecting puppies from such an arrangement within the next few days.  Their sire has been gone for probably 6 years now.  The litter size we expect is what she averaged doing natural breedings. We went to a vet who does a lot of a.i. here in Wisconsin, they were great and while I was initially hesitant I know I would now do it again.

I looked into this (importing semen from Australia) for Lizzie and it's actually going to be cheaper to import a son of the dog I want to use, so that's the route I'm going.

Thanks for all your responses guys. Yes, this is a magnificent technology when used in a way to improve dog breeds. I do hope our country applies this technology already as it will be a powerful tool to improve our breeds. It is cheaper than buying a male stud & sending a bitch. I am planning to use fresh chilled semen, as frozen is not yet available here. Here's a dilemma the shipment fresh chilled semen will take a good 13 hours if I plan to use a good stud in the states or canada, is there a good chance my female will take? I have my eye on a very beautiful male in the states and I have my heart set in using him.

I know this post was a few months ago, but I have to ask a few things. I tried breeding two girls the last couple months using fresh chilled semen flown in, and we did it both times TCI. Both girls missed. One girl, she has had two successful litter before, the other has never been bred. We use Dr. Hutchison's practice, can't get any better than that. When you had misses with the AI, was it TCI? We are trying again with the first girl that has had litters before, but will be doing it surgically. The other girl I am using a stud in town, in case she cannot even conceive at all. So frustrating, but am wondering if the TCI or any AI is hit or miss, and hoping we will have success next time doing it surgically.

I don't know much about doing them fancy...LOL. The only one I've ever done was maiden bitch and dog..done in person. I did the collection and insertion...no progesterone testing or anything. I got 4 pups from that, 4 bitches 1 did not make it.

I am assuming that the progesterone level was right and the sperm was checked for motility etc since it was at Hutch's place?

Pegesterone testing done on both, and sperm was also excellent for both. Girl 1, her cycle was almost 7 wks. We did about 4 weeks of pegest. testing until her levels were right. Dr. Hutch thinks she might possibly have a cyst, so doing it surgically next time, he can take out any cycts if they find them. We will also be giving her a hormone next time to put her in ovulation after her cycle begins.

Girl 2 has never had puppies, so for her I am using a boy on the spot for her next time. If she can have puppies, maybe for her second litter I will have the sperm shipped in for her again, but will wait to see if she is even able to have a litter.

Dr. Hutch was disappointed for us too, he really loved both these Pug girls, and is going to help to figure why neither one conceived. I know another Pug breeder that has had 100% success doing it this way, TCI, and then my handler has never had good luck this way.

We had our regular vet do the progesterone testing, and we shipped fresh cooled semen for 2 AI's back in January.  We had a litter of 11 labs.  Wouldn't hesitate to do it that way again.

I am trying the fresh chilled with my one girl again, but Dr. Hutch wants to do it surgically next time. I bred another girl doing an AI myself at home, really did not give much hope as my last two at Hutches practice failed, but she is now 6 weeks and huge! My first time doing an AI. I also changed her diet to Pro Plan, don't know if diet had anything to do with it, my others have been on holistic foods for ages, but I am putting all my girls back on Pro Plan, just in case.
