    Savanna's Spinal *edited*

     Hey Everyone,

We just rescued a sweet mini dachshund from the Montgomery County Humane Society, she has a spinal injury which from my understanding is fairly common in Dachshund's, She arrived at the shelter scared, and alone, and no one knew anything about her. She had obvious problems with her spine, as she can't walk very well... her back legs wobble quite badly, and they were afraid that there wasn't anything that they could do for her. They contacted the Dachshund rescue group in Houston, but they turned her down because of the cost involved in treating the dog.

My wife, and I went up to the shelter, as we volunteer at other animal shelters around Houston, and had not been to the MCHS yet.

Savanna was not with the other dogs. She was in a travel crate on a table. We went over and read her information sheet, and noticed that it said "Recommend Euthanasia." We asked the volunteers at the front desk about her on the way out. They said that they thought that she had disk issues, but they couldn't do x-rays or diagnostics, as they have limited resources, and are moving to a new location in two weeks. We asked if we could take her to prevent her from being put down. They told us that they would have to check with the shelter manager.

The next day, we called the shelter first thing in the morning. They told us that we could come and get her for a $20.00 adoption fee. We went and picked her up. When we got there, it turns out that she had been there for three weeks, and she didn't have any shots or a heart worm test. We had them give her her shots, and unfortunately, her heart worm test came back positive. We still couldn't leave her there, as she was the sweetest thing.

When we got her, we immediately took her to the vet. She has the worst kennel cough that we have ever seen, and we have fostered dozens of dogs in the past. She also has a severe ear infection in both ears, along with ear mites, and her heart worms.

Ill admit this is overwhelming that this poor girl has so much going on with her but we are willing to work it out right now we are treating her for her kennel cough, & ear infection were treating it by giving her clavomox it seems to be helping. we're just going to take it one step at a time,

We have been fortunate enough to have found some one to sponsor her heartworm treatment, which we will only have to cover $100. we are trying to raise funds for a diagnostic exam of her back, which is a full work up and x-rays needed--$375.00 quote was given by the vet.

*content edited* way wish us luck,

WOW, that's strange.  I used to work at the Montgomery County Humane Society & I can't recall them ever adopting out a dog that was heartworm positive.

Out of curiosity, which location did you adopt from?

we got her from the location on East Dallas. they hadn't  tested her yet until for heart worms or given her her shots, till before we were gonna take, but they did have us sign a acknowledge contract that we were adopting her though she was sick,  so I think thats one of the reasons they allowed us to take her.

You adopted a dog you knew was sick, which is admirable, but you didn't know you couldn't afford the treatment?
