    Another Question on Tear Staining

This is a continuation of the Angel Eyes thread. I just noticed that the multi vitamin that I give my dogs contains brewers yeast. Since yeast can be a culprit of staining, could this contribute to the stains? I received the Angel Eyes yesterday and mixed it in with her yogurt and she ate it. The funny thing is, my other dog doesn't have the staining and they eat the same things. Wierd!

Is there a home remedy for the tear staining problem?  Baby is now on a wheat free diet, and just one eye still has slight staining.  Should I also buy the Angel tears?  Or is there something I can do at home?

My girls are almost wheat free, except for the dog cookies that they get, they are grain free.  We've been using the Angel Eyes since my last post in November and it's working great.  You have to be dilligent about giving it every day - they love the taste too.  After I ran out of the first small bottle I went on Amazon and purchased a large bottle and saved a lot of $$. Layla's staining has almost fully grown out - I trimmed it off the other night and it looks so much better.  I wish I had taken before and after pics. Maybe I can find a before pic and take one now. Other than the Angel Eyes, I didn't find anything else that worked.  Oh, I also give them probiotics from the holistic pet store.  It's a flavorless, odorless powder that I mix in their food. I always wash their faces and eye area after each meal too. I've always done that, but none of the stain removing products worked for us and I don't really like putting that stuff near their eyes anyway. Good luck to you!

Thank you for your reply.  I realized after I got off line that I should have said angel eyes.  I will try that also, I think that she is completely wheat free now, but with cleaning (not everyday) and having her eat what I have, it may take a bit more, but I would like to see it GONE!  So, I will try this and post results when I have some!  Again, Thanks!

Are there any pet stores that sell angel eyes, I hate paying for shipping and handling.

You would have to check in your area. None of the ones in my area did, so I had to purchase it online.  It has done wonders for my girls eyes and they don't need to stay on it forever.  I'm not sure if it's okay for puppies though. You may want to check first - didn't you just adopt a cute new puppy???  Amazon was the cheapest place that I could find it. Good luck! :)

    Auburn---

Many of the smaller "boutique" pet stores around here cary this product.  Also, check with your local Petco---mine carries it, but not all do.

I used this product for ten days, when my tzu developed tear stains after a course of antibiotics (he had no tear staining prior to the antibiotics)---I also upped his dose of probiotics to replenish the beneficial bacteria in his GI tract. It seemed to do the trick.  My recommendation, if you do decide to use this product, is to go with half the recommended dosage, and to use for a short duration (my vet suggested the ten day course).

I also give my girls probiotics that I purchased at the holistic pet store, they also get plain yogurt each day.

Check your local groomers also.  That is the first place I ever heard of it, a groomer friend of mine.

Tearing and red staining can come from several different things.  Excessive tearing can be a clogged tear duct as well as a bacterial or red yeast infection.  It can be caused by an eyelash that turns under or even from hair around the eye irritating it.  As someone has apparently mentioned, it can be caused by allergies to food, grass, home cleaning products, etc.

Make sure that you are keeping the area under the eye dry.  You can do this by wiping with a cotton ball once or twice a day.  You can also put a drop of Visine on the cotton ball (NOT in the eye) and wipe under the eye with it.  I have had more luck with that than with any of the commercial products.

I generally recommend to my clients to talk to their vets about the tear staining as they can make sure that it is not a clogged duct or other medical reason.  They can also prescribe medication that will clear up the bacteria or yeast infection generally at less cost than commercial products like Angel Eyes.   I have a whole post on it here at my blog.

    Hope this helps.
