Vomitting for weeks

    Vomitting for weeks

We are going on week 3 of Jack's vomitting.  He can not hold any of his food down.  We were feeding Nutro kibbles and canned.  He throws every meal back up within 2 to 8 hours.  It is all undigested.  We have tried plain rice, rice and cottage cheese, plain chicken, chicken and rice, a combo of rice, oatmeal, sweet potatoes and chicken, and even chicken baby food.  Nothing works.  He has had 1 barium series, blood tests, 2 ultrasounds, and today the vet is going to "scope" him.  The vet is totally confused.  Every test comes back normal.  He is now talking exploritory surgery!!!!  Any clues we have missed, any diet we can try?  He is still hungry and energetic (don't know how that's even possible).  He does have Valley Fever and Heartworms, but the vet doesn't think those have anything to do with the vomitting.  I can't give him his Valley Fever meds until I get the vomitting stopped, since it must be taken with food.  HELP!!!!!

have you tried any allergy testing/elimination diet?

no - what is an elimination diet?

If the dog can't hold ANYthing down then it's not allergies (because nothing is being absorbed into the body).  Absolutely NOT that.

It sounds VERY like an obstruction -- have x-rays been done?  An ultrasound?

There are times when they have swallowed something that just plain will NOT show on an x-ray even.  Things like cotton fibers can be unbelievably difficult to 'find'.

Is the dog 'pooping'??  If nothing is coming out and food is ejected from the stomach then it's nearly got to be an obstruction.  (See when they obstruct the intestines simply "fill up" because nothing can exit the body -- waste backs up TO the stomach and then stomach acid continues to pore into the stomach so nothing can stay IN the stomach - it's just ejected as vomitus.

It's a good possibility that surgery may be your only option -- I have a friend who had a situation very like this -- it went on for days and days and into weeks because nothing tested out.  They finally did an ultrasound (which sounded SO expensive) but it helped the vet locate the blockage.  Cedar went on to live to be a ripe old age!

Can you get to your state's best vet school?  Often they are far far less expensive than you might think -- just another option for you.

i have a dog that went several days of vomiting undigested meals, not keeping any of it down. we already knew he had a lot of allergies, and the first assumption was a new food allergy. after many tests, changes in diet, changes in how he was fed, more tests, we finally determined that it was inhalant allergies triggering digestion problems. also, even the tiniest bit of food being absorbed could trigger a reaction.

Yes - my vet has had a specialist come in and they did 2 ultrasounds on 2 different days, thinking they missed something the first time around.  Nothing.  He does poop - sometimes it looks good - sometimes it's like diahrea.  When they did the Barium - every thing looked good, and he had a good bowel movement afterwards.  The vet hoped the Barium might have helped anything pass that was "stuck", but the vomiting continues.  Last night the vet had me give him Pepcid, then 1/2 cup of chicken babyfood at 5pm, another 1/2 cup at 7pm, and at 2:30 this morning he threw it up.  I'm at wits end!!

What the heck is an inhalant allergy?

What kind of dog is Kee Shu - I think I might want a lap dog and she is soooooooooo cute!

It sounds like you are feeding him a lot of chicken type products. What else have you tried protein wise that doesn't involve chicken?

inhalant allergy would be allergic to inhalants -- like pollen, dust, etc. elimination diet is feeding him one protein source, of a variety he has never been exposed to.

this article explains it better than i can.

When the vomiting started I tried just plain rice.  I have also tried rice and cottage cheese.  The Nutro food he was on when all this started was Venison or Lamb. That's all.

Where are you located? Are you near a vet. school or some sort? Like Michigan State University? They are often really good at figuring things like these out.

We rescued him from the desert 4 months ago.  I can't imagine he's getting more dust or pollen than he did in the desert???  But I'm open to anything at his point.  I went and bought some new food after I dropped him off at the vet this morning.  The ladies at the store said the same thing so I bought Duck formula, since he hasn't had that before.  I love my vet, but they (most vets) sure are not much on anything but commercial dog foods.  I don't even trust their "prescription" dog foods.

keep in mind that there can be other ingredients in the food he's allergic to, although the protein source is the most common. mine is allergic to carrots, beets, dairy ( milk, cheese), eggs, along with several meats, and a few other things that i'm not remembering.

i do hope you are able to figure out what's going on with him soon. i feel for ya.
