    we had the big day...

jake was neutered yesterday.  he is doing very well.  mostly just laying around.  i was just wondering how long does it generally take before the dog starts to act like himself again?  assuming his behavior isnt changed from the procedure.

Congrats. It depends. The first day or slow might be slow, especially by a vet's advice, in order not to rip out any stitches.

For Shadow, the surgery was nothing. Being at the vet's was traumatic. He expressed his glands near me when he was getting the sedation shot. 12-07-05. The vet keeps all surgeries overnight. We had an ice and snow storm overnight. Next day, I showed up in my cold suit (insulated overalls and jacket) and my american choppers watch cap. He didn't recognize me at first. Then I spoke my greeting and he perked up a little. He traded kisses and barks with the beagle in the next kennel. We got home and he slept most of the day and seemed morose. I think he thought we were going to leave him there forever. I cooked a steak for him that night and he knew he was home. The next day, we were back to walking, though not too far. By the end of the week, we were walking farther than we used to and playing all the time.

thanks )  the vet i took him to doesnt keep them overnight.  i took him in at 9 in the morning yesterday and picked him up at 4 in the afternoon.  he was pretty shaken up just for being there but once we got home he knew everything was back to normal except he was pretty sore.  we did go out for about a 10 minute walk very late last night around midnight.  he wanted to keep walking but i decided to limit it.  other than that hes just been laying around which he did a lot before anyway now hes just doing it more which was expected.  but sometimes he kind of cowers like he did something wrong.  when we were walking he was shaking his head a lot, like one of his ears was bothering him, was that maybe an after effect of the anesthesia?

thats the way i used to do it..neuter in the AM , home in the PM because sitting in a cage all night  allows them time to sit and lick...at home they are usually too occupied to worry about a little incision...As I always told clients the dbest  post op pain med is scratching behind the ear...keeps them occupied..it works great

I just got Athena spayed yesterday and the whole time after she got home she just wanted to sleep in her crate.  I left the door open so if she wanted to get up and move she could.  Today she isn't 100% but i would say about 50% back to normal.  Wanting to p;ay with toys and what not but I am limiting her activity.  She seems a little sore but seems to relax some after i pet her.  She had a really hard time at the HS.  They actually called me because she was so scared that the couldn't get her out of the cage.  I was on my way out the door when they called and said they had to muzzle her.  I've never had a problem with her so i don't know, but she was fine when she got home.  She was just glad to be back at the house.

you can take the nicest pup on the world and put he or she in an abnormal situation, of which surgery and in a cage are pretty abnormal and they can become panicy and totaly out of control..They are scared and some what in discomfeort...I have had manmy a patient like that who were the nicest  dog in the world but can be so frightened that they  are cage panicy but it all passes and the next time they come in they were back to their  nice sweet normal pup...as they say "this too shall pass"

I think Max came out of the anesthetic "his old self*. [:D] He was still sleeping when I picked him up at the vets and when he woke up in his new forever home I thinik he realized that he wasn't in a cage for the first time in about 11 days and immediately got a case of the zoomies

Exactly!  Racing madly from one room to another, jumping over chairs and tables, basically being a total nut case.  It's kinda fun to watch.[:D]
