Have you ever heard such a thing?

I have a friend who has pit bull puppies. She took them to her vet because she thought the female was pregnant. He felt around her belly and said she wasn't. So my friend asked about getting them fixed, and the vet said they were too old! They are only about a year old! And then, a few months later the female had puppies!  So she was pregnant! I tod her to find a new vet because he obviously didn't know what he was talking about. We adopted all of our dogs at an older age and got them all fixed! Angry

onae problem...if the vet doesn;'t feel anything then he.she cannot say the dog is pregant.  Ive had that happen to me many a time but i would say i don;t feel anything rather than say the dog wasn;t,, but why he said they were too old to spay beats me

Wow, yeah, time for a new vet. Feelin for pups is not a reliable way! I've seen dogs hide pups up so far in their ribcage that it's impossible...

Too OLD to alter??? That's one I've never heard. Does that make the dog too old to have a uterine infection too? Or too old for testicular cancer??? I think NOT!

Maybe the vet meant the pups were too old for the mom to be spayed?

Re:  Feelin for pups is not a reliable way....nor is radiograph unless the pups have either skulls of spinal columns...Too early and you cannot see the pups and thusly cannot say the female is pregnant...You have to feel something or see something before youcan be sure...Even the endcrine tests can be non specific...

well if she had puppies a few months after going to the vet, she likely would have just been bred, I assume? There's no way for anyone to tell if a dog is pregnant right after conception.

The too old to spay thing makes absolutely no sense though. I hope she's found another vet and gotten the female an appt to be spayed

i agree with they are to old to spay thing...I have done pyometras on 16 year olds...barring a healthproblem they are never to old to spay----but i would like to know the real reason in the vet's thinking

In Vietnam, almost dog owners think the older the better for dogs spayed or neutered. They say The dogs are too young to be spayed or neutered until over one year old!!!Of course this is wrong. These should be done befor the first season for femal and befor 7 months old for male.

i siigned a petition and donated money to a group of Ex GI's who had to leave their  guard dogs over there after the "conflict"...they were afraid , and rightly so, that the dogs would be eaten...apparantly puppies are a dlicasy over ther so the more spays, the fewer dog meals ...

I am inclined to think your friend misunderstood the vet.  Too old to neuter at a year?  That makes no sense.

I've only heard of dogs too weak to be spayed.  My friend's dog was born with genetic defects and required meds at a really young age.  The vet said she had a 50% chance of surviving if he chose to have her spayed, so he opted not to.

I dont think dogs are ever too old to be neutered/spayed.  And male pups can be neutered at a very young age also, and I know shelters often do that and the pups heal up in no time.
