    Dane getting spayed on Tuesday...

Ok Athena is the first female dog I have owned, and I am taking her in to get her spayed on Tuesday.  I was planning on getting an e-collar this weekend before she goes in so I have it when she gets home.  I was just wondering if there is anything I should watch for or give her for the pain and itching?  When I got my terrier mix neutered I had an e-collar for him and he was all healed up in about a week, but the first few days he was in some pain and would always try to lick at it when the e-collar was off.  I just want Athena's spay to go as smooth as possible because I know of all the problems that can occur during the time after a spay that can't with a neuter.

very rarely did i perscribe pain  med for post spays because i would rather that they kinda limit their activity and a littlw twinge of incisional pain  kept them from jumping and running and doing the things that might stress the incision...Very rarely do people have post spay problems but if in doubt your vet can Rx pain med...Also an e-callar or a neck collar often can be used but i think a sterile pad over the incision wrapped with an ace bandage...obviously not too tigh but enought to prevent licking...I use to tell clients that the most dangerou8se part of neutering surgery was the trip in the car to and from the office...nowdays, withe the preop testing etc, it is all a very safe procedure....relax and enjoy all the scratching and attention your pup will get after getting home....

i wouldnt use the collar unless you really see a need.  emma licked her incision area a teeny bit every now and then which i think is ok.  but excessive licking is the problem.  i would vote no on pain meds.  they really dont need them i think its just another way to get more money out of you.

It's ok she still hasn't been spayed because the Friday before she started throwing up and having diarrhea.  I took her to the vet that Monday and the found nothing wrong with her.  So I just made her a different appointment.  She is now going on the 26th of this month.  I have the e-collar that I bought from petsmart just in case.  I only have this because my mom's dog started chewing on her incision and almost broke it open.  Thankfully she still had an e-collar from her rottie's surgery years ago.  Athena is used to the e-collar from when she had her jaw broke and had it muzzled.  So if needed she will be fine with it.

A passing remark but because Danes are such massive dogs, just be sure you keep her undr leash conatrol for a few days..because of their weight they can put much strain on the incision....

In our case, I had already trained Shadow to the word, "no." So, when he would lick at it, which wasn't often, I would let him go for a little bit and then say "no" and he obeyed. And nary a problem.

Bubblegum was spayed last year right after I got her,,,,and she is over 3 yrs old. No problems at all. The vet told me to dab the incision with some peroxide once a day. She didn't try to lick it. Biggest problem we had was keeping her from walking stairs for a couple of weeks1

Thankfully we have no stairs and she does like to jump but i will keep her leashed until it heals up.  And i don't mind if she licks some.  I just don't what her to start chewing on it like my mom's dog did so i have an e-collar on hand just in case.  I think the day she comes home she will be a little out of it so she will be easy to control, but after that I'll have my hands full because she loves to run and jump and play.

Bubblegum is pretty wild,,,but she was good for days.
My computer is up stairs,,,,so that was a problem since I'm on it a lot. We put a childs gate by the steps and she cried the whole time I was up here.  Needless to say I was NOT on the computer much those days!

I'm thinking i will just keep her in the living room with me where i can watch tv and get on the computer and then at night she will be crated.  I might have to watch the other dogs more because they like to jump on her so she will play.

Haha yea a Terrier mix and a pug aren't the best thing to have around when you are trying to keep a hyper great dane pup calm so she can heal.  I just know when she was sick a few weeks ago they climbed up on the couch and sat on her and she just growled because she wasn't feeling good.  Thankfully i was close by so i got them off of her.  Poor girl.  I'll just have to make sure if i do leave her for a second that the other two follow me which they usually do anyway.

Ok I have another question about this.  Athena is getting spayed this Friday May 26th, but I have to make a trip up to SC (7-8 hour drive) the following Friday June 2nd.  Do you think it will be ok to take her with me?  I really have no one to watch her, but I don't want to take her if it will harm her.  When we go on trips she rides in the back seat with a harness seat belt on.  She doesn't get all stressed out in the car and usually just sleeps or chews a bone.  Even with all that would it still be safe after a week of healing?
