Puppy Spay Question?

    Puppy Spay Question?

I had Molly spayed yesterday. When thru the thing with the vet that she ate the 3" pig skin 60 hours ago. He said no problem if her poop was fine and eating was fine also. She turned 8 months old today and I wanted her it to be spayed before she had her first heat cycle. I picked her up this morning as she had to stay over night (but the vet checks on the animals that go thru surgery 3 times during the night). It was not a good night here with Molly not here. But I did live through it hour by hour(my waking moments checking on the clock hour by hour after hour till I could go get her) Her incision is about 1 inch long. She is eating better now  then before the spay. I`m say`in that is because of food with held be for the spay. But tonight she pooped and (cried) doing the duty. It was (small but firm( just not as long) as she didin`t get food the night before I`m thinking being small. Also at the vets office said ( the best around here that everyone has told me also and the most expensive) that she could go upstairs and jump on the couch or whatever as soon as she gets home today. Do you all agree with this? Molly walks aound for about 30 sec. and sits down. Something is up here That I can`t figure out. Does she feel uncontrolable (but not cry) or what? She has a pain tolerance of 0%. Thanks for any input here.

Well there's going to be a bit of discomfort right after surgery, and I'm sure the incision area feels a bit funny as well. As long as there isn't obvious severe pain/swelling etc I wouldn't worry too much.  A little discomfort keeps them from overdoing it

Having food withheld can affect the amount of stool, and the anesthetic can throw their "plumbing" off a bit for a few days too.  I'm sure she'll be back to normal in a day or two.

When any of mine are sputered we have a recovery period that includes a good deal of crating, out to potty only on lead, minimal stairs and NO jumping, running or climbing.  Their bodies need time to heal and I sure wouldn't let her run and jump.  Not for several days.

Totally agree with Glenmar about the jumping etc. That was the one recommandation from the vet when we had ours spayed. No zoomies, no running, no jumping, no climbing, no rough play with each other for several days.
No input for the uncomfort because ours did not act much different even right after.

Thanks for the info. I didn`t think she should be jumping and playing ect so soon. She is feeling better today. She still crys when she poops though. I called one of the people at the vets office today (at home) but she is a friend and she was puzzled by the pooping and crying thing. Hope this is just because of the stitches. Time will tell.

I was always told no activity for a week (had my Molly spayed a year ago) and limited to low activity for another week.
A woman is down for 6+ weeks after a hysterectomy!!! And that's what dogs have.

What do you mean she ate a 3inch pig skin after surgery?  Why would you give her a "rawhide" I am assuming,   Has she eaten these before?  Perhaps it is obstructing her instestines and that is why she is crying.

My pup was spayed last month.  I tried to watch her and not let her run or jump.  But eventually she ran down my hill and pulled her stitches out on Day 8 I think.  It was weeping  a little blood.  Vet told me to peroxide it ( he say its not true that peroxide will kill good tissue) .   The stiches was also hanging by the thread.

My pup acted like nothing happened.  She even had eye and throat surgery during the spay.  So I would be concerned if she is acting like it hurts.

I did give homeopathic ARNICA 30c for pain every 12 hours.  I did give NUX VOMICA after surgery to get the anathesia out of her body.  The vet gave me Rimadyl for pain which I did not use.

She had the pig skin 60 hours (before) the spay surgery. I did talk to the vet before the spay and told him what she had done. I think she cried when going poop at first was from the discomfort after the surgery as today she is fine no more crying. Shes is eating good, poops fine, incision looks great also. I do not give her rawhide anything. Pig skin is ok I was told because it is suppose to be alot more digestible then rawhide. Yes it was my fault she swallowed the piece of pig skin as I always take it away when it gets small and through it away. The reason was on another post.

We are having our lab puppy spayed at 6 months.  Is there  any expected behavioral changes that I should be prepared for?  I have heard that altering 'calms them down'.  It doesn't matter either way, she is a great girl, but I just want to be prepared.  Thanks

I don't know if this is the same in dogs.  But, in humans, when they have an IV, it can make them constipated.  My friend told me this after she had one, and then when I had one, and the same thing happened, I asked my doctor and he said that it was true.  How is she doing today?

Mollys doing great. She no longer cries when she goes poop. I`m so glad the spay thing is over with. I wanted her to be spayed (before) her first heat cycle and she was pushing 8 months old. The roads here have been not so good (lots of ice to drive on). I finally found two days that the weather looked good (one to take her and the other to pick her up). Well I did end up driving on ice to pick her up. Darn weatherman anyway. Can`t wait till she can play again. Counting the days.

Molly and I did good she as she was spayed before her 1st heat cycle. [sm=clapping%20hands%20smiley.gif]

Dottiew24 - There are many more peolpe on this board that can answer your question. I have heard that it calms males down. Females I don`t know. I always thought that came with age. You could start your own post with this question and get some answers from other forum members. Good luck with your pup.
