Why NOT neuter?

DPU:  Meilani, The invitation is still extended.  I will bring a soapbox and flag.  Let's see if you have the courage to make the same speech in front of a live audience while more importantly, handling a foster and helping are furry friends in need at the same time.

Meilani:  It sounds like a lot of fun and I would love to help out but alas, I'm stuck in that hell hole of a pharmacy on Saturday. [&:]

In all honesty, I have no problems speaking my mind about spay/neuter of pets and the shelter overpopulation. I think if more people were aware of the shelter overpopulation and how many animals are euthanized yearly due to it, they might not be so blase about owning intact animals and/or allowing them to reproduce so carelessly. Sadly though, if I were to run my trap, it might turn a lot of people off as a lot of them don't like to be told they need to take responsibility for their pets(or anything thing else in their lives) and I wouldn't want to jeopardize the adoption of the dogs.

Exactly!  To get your message across its all in the delivery.  Calling someone stupid, lazy, crazy, and irresponsible just plain old turns the message off.  This is what I am exploring on the other thread.  Who's responsible and what is a better approach than always pointing the finger at JQP where JQP may not know any better.

Easy to blame masses rather than to work out problems.  Standing on a soap box is great, but to encourage people using positive tools is perhaps more difficult.  To reach a public, you need to understand your demographics.  How to get this particular group to comply with rules that help create humane situations for these dogs.  Legislation is important to get offending areas to improve.

To say everyone else is doing this right and what is wrong here is not going to be effective or helpful.  And it is plainly an unsupported statement.  Take a look at the Advocacy portion of the forum.   It is amazing what people can do to animals, without a thought.   And it so far worse than euthenizing.  It is unbelievable and horrifying.

editing in here:  Actually asking "what is wrong here?" is a fantastic way to get people on board.  Rather than kicking butt, saying negative things which impede communication, causing people to question what they do is always a better approach, to encourage using unused portions of their brains and see that we need some healthful changes.

I can agree that the delivery can turn people off but it doesn't necessarily mean that it's untrue. If I were in a crowd of people and someone asked me what I believe to the reasons why a lot of people do not spay/neuter their animals and why the shelter overpopulation is what it is, I would say exactly what I said here.. that I believe it to be because a lot of people are uneducated, irresponsible and lazy. That's exactly how I feel and I really don't know if you can say that in a nice way and quite frankly, I don't know if I'd want to sugarcoat that. I've also found that no matter how nice you say it, a lot of people don't want to hear that they need to take responsibility for their actions. Hell, I work in a field where I get screamed at on a daily basis by a lot of people who are mad that I didn't call them to remind them to refill/pick up their medication. If I suggest that they can call whenever they want in order to inquire about the status of their medication, well that's just crazy talk. I feel we live in a society where the word "responsibility" is considered to be a dirty word.

Anyways, I hope the adoption goes well on Saturday. I've never been to the Petsmart in Orland Park, just the one in Crestwood. I'll have to check it out one of these days. [:)]

What you describe is a protest environment and my thinking is that is should be an education/teaching environment.  Think of the last time you were taught something and the approach that was used and how excited and receptive you were to learn more.

As an American, I believe that MissKiwi is correct. Look at our shelter overpopulation compared to other developed countries. It's astronomical. You also have to keep in mind that the majority of people on this board do not represent John and Jane Q Public. The majority on this board are responsible dog folk who base their decisions on education. John and Jane Q Public get their dogs from BYB's and pet stores, feed them Old Roy, won't spay their bitch because she should have one litter and won't neuter their dogs because it will take away his manhood. If their bitch gets pregnant, they have no qualms about taking the pups to the shelter because "It's no problem, the shelter will find good homes for them". We live in a country where we have the latest medical technology and that includes veterinary medicine. We live in a country where you can go to a library or go online and find out all sorts of information about irresponsible breeding and the shelter overpopulation yet puppy mills still flourish and we euthanize 3 to 4 million pets a year. So if this isn't due to laziness and stupidity then what's the excuse?

    Very, VERY true!!! [sm=clapping%20hands%20smiley.gif]

So if this isn't due to laziness and stupidity then what's the excuse?

    .money/greed
.lack of teaching by the professionals
.lack of utilizing resources that the common public would view and actually learn
.lack of interest, many don't have or care about having a dog or a cat
    .lack of legislation -
;professional groups could push for more air time in the public eye, ie. @championships

.."Look at our shelter overpopulation compared to other developed countries. It's astronomical.."

References that prove this statement would be helpful.  Then more answers may come to that first question.  True comparisons can be extremely productive.

I work at the Michigan Humane Society and we spay/neuter all of our animals.  The lady I got my pup from just about had a cow when I told her I was going to spay Murphy.  She wants to breed him atleast once, and is acting like Murphy belongs to her.  The only reason she wants this is because he reminds her so much of the dad, which she foolishly sold.  She even tried to buy back Murphy because she loves him so much.  I was attached from day one, so that was out of the question.

Boy, I hope this great post did not get overlooked.  Total opposite to the teachings of the sisterhood and their schooled ;pups.
