Wish us luck!

    Wish us luck!

Ogre is going in for his neuter tomorrow and I'm scared to DEATH. I've had dogs neutered before, and I know it's a minor surgery and not a big deal, but I'm still terrified that something will go wrong, or that he'll get an infection, or that he'll tear his stitches.[:(]

We found a low cost neuter clinic 3 hours away in Augusta. The vets here all quoted us at over $400 because of his size, but this place only charges $100, so I'm pretty happy. They seem super nice and were willing to completely go over the surgery with us over the phone. It's still going to be a long trip though...we have to leave at 5 AM to make his 8:30 appointment. Crying  It's worth it though based on how much we're saving.

Anyway, send us healing vibes and wish us luck! I know it's routine, but I'm still completely worried. [:o]

Wishing you a calm day and that Ogre has no problems with the neuter.  I know how hard it is when ever surgeries involved and the day can seem pretty long, but I'm sure he'll be fine.  That's amazing that you were quoted $400 - wow, that seems really high.  Glad you found a more reasonably priced place to do it.

Good lucki!  I'm surprised that the cost is based on size.  I might be wrong, but I would think that the surgery would be easer to do on a larger dog than on a little teeny one.

When the price is based on size, it's usually because of the amount of anesthesia being used, and the risks associated with 'going under'.  $400 does seem high though. I'm glad you were able to find a better value.

    Sending quick-recovery vibes your way!

Good luck! Healing vibes coming his way! [:)]

Coming in too late here to be of any help, but I'm barely south of you, and there is no way you should have to pay $400 for a neuter, even if you add in blood work and pain meds.

Good luck to your boy, though!  Sending good vibes...

Thanks for the well wishes. [:D] We're back, finally. Other than a long car trip, everything was fine. He was still groggy when we picked him up, but now he's doing alright. He's passed out on the floor asleep, wearing some old gym shorts to keep him from bothering the incision. I'll post some pictures I took today of him in a bit.

As for the cost- that wasn't the cost of the neuter alone. He also needed Frontline, Heartguard, a HW test, and his rabies vacc. (He already had his other vaccines.) We were quoted at $250-$300 for the neuter, depending on weight, and with everything else added it would have been over $400. I should've been more clear on that, sorry. [;)] We took him here: [linkhttp://csralifesaver.com/_wsn/page2.html]http://csralifesaver.com/_wsn/page2.html[/link]  Their prices are AMAZING, and in IMO, well worth the trip. Even with gas it turned out to be alot less than it would have been here. Plus...I have personal problems with several of the vets here who refused to treat one of my female rats who was in need of an emergency c-section. I just moved here a couple of months ago, and had a great rat vet in Columbus, but NONE of the vets here were willing to treat her because she was "just a rat." It's a long story, but it's a personal thing for me. I'll use the vets here if I have an emergency, but for routine stuff I'm going to continue to go to my old vet in Columbus, and for spays and neuters, I'll be using the clinic I used today. Yeah it's alot of travelling, but...well, that's just how I'm most comfortable doing it. [8D]

But, like I said, I'll post pics from today in a bit! [:D

Glad that it all went well and hopefully the recovery will go smoothly as well.

p.s. I lived in Warner Robins for about 5 or 6 months.  Do you like the area?  It was a huge transition for someone who's lived in Calif. most of her life [:D].

I'm not trying to be rude or anything, but you got all that for $100?  I am prabably missing something here.

Cakana, I'll PM you to keep this on topic.

Hehe, don't worry, you're not being rude...I'm just not explaining things correctly.

The surgery itself was quoted to us at around 100 dollars, which is why I put in my post that it would cost around $100 at this clinic to have him neutered. The website I linked to lists it as $70 for large dogs, but they told us on the phone that it actually varies based on weight. The surgery itself ended up costing $85. His rabies vacc. was $10, his HW test was $15, HW prevention was $30, and Frontline was $48. So, altogether, we spent $188, instead of the nearly $400 (that's a rough estimate) it would have cost us to get all of that at the vets I talked to here. This place is a low cost spay and neuter clinic, that's all they do, they don't charge an office fee, and everything is *incredibly* cheap. (Here's the link again: [linkhttp://csralifesaver.com/_wsn/page2.html]http://csralifesaver.com/_wsn/page2.html[/link] ;)

I can see how my first post was confusing...I listed the total that everything would cost from a vet here, but ONLY the ;price of the surgery at the low-cost clinic, rather than the complete cost of everything. I hope that clears things up. Sorry for being so confusing.

Edited to add: I posted some pictures here: [linkhttp://forum.dog.com/asp/tm.asp?m=196275]http://forum.dog.com/asp/tm.asp?m=196275[/link]

And Cakana, to be honest...I really don't like it much here. I don't think it's a particularly bad place, I just absolutely hate change and it can take me YEARS to get used to a new place. I'm originally from Lafayette, Louisiana, but I grew up in Columbus, Ga. I moved here in August right after I got married because my husband is stationed at Warner Robins. I don't think it's a particularly bad place, I just still get a bit homesick and I'm terrible at meeting new people so that doesn't help. Plus I'm 19, a newlywed, and just got out on my own for the first time...it's just alot to deal with at once. But really, I don't plan on staying here. My husband has another year in the military and then we're going to use our savings to buy some land and have a hobby farm..somewhere. Not sure yet, but I'm considering moving back to Louisiana. [:D
