Cost to Neuter?

    Cost to Neuter?

I just don' t know what the norm is as far as costs.  My vet gave me
an estimate (of course with her added recommendations) 432.00.
Now come on.....I need him neutered, front dew claws removed and last round of boosters.
I went to get an estimate from another vet today and that one was
way less.  Like 250 total.  My third estimate was 247 w/out the dew claws cuz she wasnt sure about that, had to talk with the doc
    first.
I dont mind paying roughly 250 but 432?  Thats nuts!  Same vet gave me an estimate to get my cat's teeth cleaned and a mole or growth removed...total.. 426.00.
Is she trying to rape me?

Wow that is WAY too high. Shelters will do spay/neuter for much much cheaper (sometimes even free if you have a really low income) I think the highest price was 45 bucks (for a spay) in a Florida shelter for my aunts Maltese.

A neuter is much less complicated and the shelter is definately your best bet!

We actually got Sampson from the shelter and they will do the neuter for free if we take him back.  I didnt want to take him back
cuz he was really sick when we first got him.  I don't want to take
the chance of him getting sick again (pneumonia).  It's prob no different at an animal hospital...theres still sick animals there.  Im
a freak!  I must admit, after looking at these estimates, the thought crossed my mind.  My pet ins will reimburse me for some of the costs anyway.  I'll prob go with the 250 estimate and should get back 65 for the nueter and 30 for the shots...i think i may even get one office visit a year paid for.
The 432 price tag is a bit crazy though.  I certainly think thats unreasonable.

Over $400 is really high for a surgery that's basically *snip snip & they'e gone*.  A lot of places don't charge that much for a spay.

that does seem very hight to me but  I was always the lower cost guy...But just because you had a problem at the spay and neuter place I would still go back..They have the same requirements for surgery antiseptics, gowning etc as private practitioners...I would not hesitate to go back...

My fiancee's mom paid $650 to have their golden retriever puppy spayed.  Yes, she is a very naive woman.

For $650 you would have expected the puppy to come home with golden stitches and a diamond encrested e-collar.

not even going to get in on this one, but I think, not knowing the size and age of the dog,,,i would probabl expect a diamond earring but  people will pay thousands for a piecs of ancient carbon and think nothing of it but will bitch at any vet fee..

You are right about that!  My vet used to say, in fits of black humor, that she was going to start quoting her fees on three cards, which she would distribute based on what she knew her clients' reaction would be.  Green for "money no object" yellow for "ouch, OK" and red for "Just euth him."  [:o]

I've never heard of such a high cost for neuter, except like Hawaii where everything is so expensive.  It cost me almost $200 to have a 75 pound female spayed and that's the most I've ever paid.  I will have my 125 pound young Maremma male neutered in a couple months and I am budgeting about $250 altogether for shots, bloodwork, surgery, etc.

I think that any price up to $250 is reasonable for a spay or neuter, if it includes bloodwork and pain therapy.  Anything over $400 is outrageous for spays/neuters.

I have already decided to got with the new vet at $250.  The location is about one mile away and they gave me a tour of their
facility, which i really liked.  It's too bad my old vet is so overpriced and constantly pushing unwanted or needed services on me.  She also gives him a fecal flotation on every visit.  I dont know if thats normal.  He had one in June then again in July when we took him for his 2nd round of boosters and she has one incl in the price for the neuter, had i decided to take him there.  I just can't justify paying that kind of money when i can the same service elsewhere for less.  Thanks for all your responses.

When I had Shadow neutered, it only cost $60 but he was already an ongoing patient, by then. That is, I'd already taken him to the vet a few times. So, his medical history was already established, including no adverse reaction to anesthesia. But that's all it was. No nail-clipping, which I should have done, and no other tests or procedures. Out like a light, slice, pull, snip, times 2. Suture, suture, kennel rest. No complications. The surgery didn't bother Shadow at all. The overnight stay in a strange kennel was what was traumatic for him. Steak in the evening got him over his depression.

Like most things, s/n surgery is tied to the general cost of living wherever you are. I live in Boston and paid over $300 (selective amnesia, I can't remember how much more than 300 it was) for my dog's neuter surgery. That included bloodwork but the bloodwork wasn't very expensive in relation to the surgery. Nothing fancy, no IV drip, didn't even have dissolvable stitches... everything just costs more here.

Heh, heh - I paid $950 big ones for Slick's neuter surgery!  This included some extras such as an IV drip, CBC, nail trim, and a small mass removal from his ear.  As Erin said depending on where you live, veterinary care is one of those things that is relative to the cost of living.  I live in NYC and it costs $95 just to make an appointment at the Vets.  ($250 for the emergency Vet!)   Oh yes, my friends... consider yourselves lucky!!  About a month ago in responding to a post, I put together my first year costs for Slick..  Let's just say in another part of the country, it would be a downpayment on a house.

WOW I wish I were still in practice....missed out on the big fees.

I know this is an old thread, but I have to ask. I called my Vet to make an appointment to get Kenshin Neutered, Rear dew claws removed, and Microchipped and here was what they would charge:

    Neuter: $222.00
    One dew claw: $70.00
    Microchip: $88.00

It would cost me $450.00. Is that to high? Should I shop around? I did get Missi spade, tattood, microchipped in Dawson Creek( about 3 hours from me) and I'm pretty sure it was alot cheaper than that. Should I just bring Kenshin there too? Thanks[:)]
