Dash' sliced paw

    Dash' sliced paw

Nothing stops this boy, even though he has bad hips and knees. He'll throw himself down the stairs nad hope that a foot or two hits the steps to help propel him down.

Anyway, he sliced his main pad open. I just got back from teh vet and we can't suture it, due to the nature of the pad. Apparently, sutures tend not to stay put there. So he's all wrapped up and miserable. He desperately wants to rip off the wrapping. He sits on the floor and whines. When he starts to try to rip it off I tell him not to and he'll stop.

Any ideas, short of an E-collar, to keep him away. The vet suggested vaseline and cayenne pepper or apple bitter . Anyone tried this?

He's so unhappy that he can't fly.[:(]

no suggestions, just wishes that he feels better soon - that's gotta hurt!

How long does it have to stay wrapped?  Poor guy...  sending get well vibes...  Maybe try to distract him with something else to chew/concentrate on and he will eventually get used to it??  Sorry I can't think of anything helpful [8|]

Poor baby! I sure hope it heals well soon!

I had to use an e-collar a few times and had great sucess with this one:

Thanks for Dash' well wishes.  I have to change teh bandage in 48 hours.  She said it would probably take about 10 days to two weeks to heal sufficiently to be uncovered. It's really a deep, gross cut.

Thanks Dana.  I was reading about Laz's stick injury.  Dash actually did the same thing about six months ago.  He runs without looking and injuries are commonplace.  The stick wasn't quite as big, though!

Ouch! Poor Dash. I hope it heals quickly.

Have you tried something like bandguard?  It was made for smearing all over dressings.

We had to use a cervical collar type of thing (I think it was called a bite-not?) and put "Fooey" spray on the bandages. That stuff is NASTY and it doesn't wash off easily. I know this from experience because I licked my fingers after using it[:'(]

My friend's dog did the same thing to her pad. My friend put that liquid bandage stuff on it at the vet's suggestion. The dumb dog ripped off her bandage and licked the liquid bandage stuff and numbed her mouth.. of course this is a dog who digs up toads in the back yard, tosses them in the air and swallows them[&:]

When Lani's foot was injured I used a sock and duck tape to keep her from messing with it.  Twice a day I would take it off and air it out for 30 minutes or more.  The bandage looked like a mummy wrap!  Just leave it uncovered when you can watch him.

Sorry to hear and hope he gets better soon.

If you can get away with it, Vicks Vapo Rub is a cheap alternative to the Bitter Apple, which usually doesn't work anyway.

hey sorry to hear about dash..anyways i work as a tech at a vet...ive seen it a few times...ask them for Bitter Orange...its a liquid to smear on the vet wrap and dogs do not like the taste...im surprised they left it untreated. at the clinic i work at they usually superglue it...this makes for interesting conversation

Hey thanks for the healing wishes and good advice.

I love the superglue or liquid bandage idea. The pad is not infected, but it doesn't seem to be mending well. It seems to me it needs to be held together better to heal.

I just saw this.  I'm sorry your boy cut himself.  That sounds like an awful wound.

    I hope he's heeling quickly!

I was going to suggest superglue the same as you! It works wonders. Nail glue stuff. The dollar store sells it. Just make sure you clean it then fill it full and leave it. Do it over and over if it comes off. Liquid bandage will not hold on a pad for more than a couple hours. It will take a few weeks if not longer to heal.
