Sores on Toe...........

    Sores on Toe...........

So Sammy has two sores on one of this toes on a front paw.  I think he scrape some skin off last week when he was trying to get out of his crate.  I think it's been there since Thursday or so?

It seems that the toe next to it keeps rubbing on the sores and keeping them from healing.  Not walking him at all until it heals really isn't an option, obviously.  So I took a tiny piece of gauze and put it between the toes and wrapped it a bit, but then it made him limp and must have scared him since he tried to be a lap dog with DH!  Twice he crawled up onto DH - which he has never done before.  So I took it off so he could walk normally.

Should I put something on it?  I'm allergic to neosporin so I don't have any in the house and can't touch it, but I can get some and have DH put it on if that is something I should do?  I don't want to call the vet for a scrape unless it keeps up and won't heal.........   Any sort of solutions I could put on there to help it heal faster and perhaps keep it from rubbing?

there is an old fashion medicine called ivy-dry for poison ivy...it has drying ingredients in it which will help or even a light bandage because if he licks it it keeps it moist whicdh prevent healing

OK, dvet, thanks I will try to get that.

The bandage thing was miserable, since then he started limping and looking at me with those doggy eyes like I was torturing him or something.  And, I was afraid if I left it on all night he would eat it or something and I wouldn't know, or he would pay more attention to it with a bandage than without.

It looks like it is beginning to scab over so I expect that it is healing, but once the scab starts itching I think I will have problems with him licking it too much again.

    Thanks again.

You could try keeping an e-collar on him during the times you aren't able to supervise him to prevent him from licking. Also, he objected to a bandage (which is a normal dog response, but they usually get over it after about 15 minutes, especially if they are being distracted by treats) but maybe you could try putting a sock over his foot. One that goes up past his elbow joint will help it stay on better, or you could use some medical tape at the top of the sock to keep it from slipping if you don't have a small enough sock. (Like a child's sock)
