My boys Big Boo-boo / Boney head protrusion

So, last night I came home and was petting the dogs - well attempting to pet with them jumping all over, etc.  I was patting the top of my boy's head when I felt a large bump - a really big one.  Of course, I immediately panicked - isn't that the normal reaction?   You know those dinosaur pictures that you drew as a kid?  The ones that had these big protruding bumps on their spine, going all the way down the dinosaur's back?  Was that a brontasaurus?  Anyway, that's exactly the shape of the bump.  It is located mid-way between the ears, and starts at the top of the head, but then moves downward toward the back of the neck area.  It feels just like a bone - like a boney growth and feels like it is 1/2"  of an inch in height and is about  1"  inche long.  Again, I just panicked and would have immediately put him in the car for the vet's had it been open.  But, they weren't,  and he wasn't showing any signs of problems.  No eye dilations or any behaviour changes.

So, I talk to my mom later on that night and we think we know what happened.  The day before, she was at my house with someone to cut down some small trees.  So, there was a chain saw and various noises going on at the back of my house.  Well, My boy's chair used to be a nice leather recliner (used to be mine!) that has a very tall back on it.  I moved it away from the wall because he would jump on it and it would move into the wall and discolour the wall. So, I have columns in the middle of my living room, and I placed it agaist a column.  He is always climbing on the very top part, and it would tip over, so I have to have it backed up to a steady object.  Well, my living room is open into part of the kitchen area where there is built in seating.  So, from the living room, you can look out into the "dining area" where there are several windows that look into the back area of the house.  That's where the trees were.  So, we surmised that he was on the very top part of the recliner, stretching to look out the windows (because it is not in a direct line of sight), and in stretching, he fell down and hit his head.

It's a really nasty, big bump.  No blood, but a biiigggg bump.   My mom thinks it will takes months to heal.   Oddly enough, I haven't noticed him on top of the recliner the last couple of days........

I haven't taken him to the vet because I don't think there is anything they will do since he is not showing neurological signs or problems.  If anybody disagrees, please tell me.  But, it's been at least one day, and most likely two days since it happened, and I haven't noticed any problems. It feels so strange because it doesn't feel like a watery swelling on top of bone, but it feels like the bone itself has protruded up.  Yeck.   Anybody have any similiar stories to share?

I hope this gets some responses because the same thing happened to my rottweiler. I flipped out, but she never acted any different so I tried to convince myself to wait and see before going to the vet. I looked on the internet for HOURS the night I found it, and they only thing I found that even remotely explained it was that a dogs sagittal crest becomes more pronounced when they get older. That didn't explain why it seemed to be an overnight occurance on my girl, but it's been the same for months since I found it and I've not noticed any changes or any signs of anything else, so I've finally decided not to worry too much.

Aa big boo boo is not a very scientific  antomical term but it works...there is an occipital crest on all dogs back where you were talking about...the crest is normao but the slightes bumb boo boo will enlarge is for a while ...should be nop problem and can be caused by anytype of a bump
