What to use on inflammed callous

Took Bandit to see the our vet today.  Unfortunately she was having a bad morning and had not gotten to the office yet.  Was told the wait may be an hour or two with no guarantee so I agreed to see the new vet in the practice since I needed to get back to work.   While I thank God that the vet thinks the lump I took him in for is nothing more than an inflammed callous, I am questioning her presciption for Deramaxx for the inflammation.   She prescribed 50mg/daily for 4 days then prn on a dog that weighs 58.6 pounds (enough meds for 10 days).  Based on everything I have read Deramaxx is for post-operative pain and osteoarthritis.  I do not see the point in giving him the meds since I would not take Advil for a sore corn on my little toe.  Has anyone else had a dog diagnosed with an inflammed callous?  If so - what did you do for it?  TIA

Robin - I agree with you and wouldn't use the meds unless you thought it was causing so much pain, that it was necessary.  I think that sometimes vets (and human Dr.'s) think they have to give us something for our $$.  They probably deal with a lot of people who aren't happy unless they leave with something in their hands too.  Sounds like it wasn't anything serious, so I'm sure you're relieved about that.

    Thanks Cathy.

Bandit is in no pain whatsoever (at least that I can tell). No licking it, no limping, nothing.  The foster dog will sometimes lick it if it's exposed when he lays down but that's about it.   I'm the one bothered by it and obsessing!  It didn't help that out of the clear blue my 10yo DD said "I don't want Bandit to lose his leg"!  LOL - talk about panic on my part!

The vet did volunteer to try to aspirate it if I wanted but she didn't feel it was necessary.  When I asked her what if it was her dog she said she would just wait and see since she expects it to resolve on its own. Guess I am not a patient person *sigh*.

I'm pretty obsessive myself and sites like this can be a blessing and curse.   Once we see the horror stories, it's easy to go to that crazy place and think the worst.  I think asking "what would you do?" to the vet is always a great way to find out if we're doing the right thing.  Hopefully this resolve in no time.
