Stomach Flu?

    Stomach Flu?

Ella had diarrhea and was vomiting, so I took her to the vet and they diagnosed her with the stomach flu. They gave me medicine to give her, and she seems to be getting back to her normal, playful self. I never knew that dogs could get the stomach flu. Has anyone else had this experience?

Did they do a fecal?  My guess is that there's bacteria in the gut -- and that can be caused by anything from slurping puddles to stress to actually getting exposed to intestinal parasites.

What was the med they gave her - that would tell you far more.

My dog Jessie had this once -- easily fixed with a quick trip to the vet and some meds.

It's good that you took Ella to the vet, though. When Jessie first had the upset stomach, people kept telling me to give her a little Immodium first to see if it fixed the problem. Thankfully, I'm a computer geek, and when I researched it, I found that while most dogs can tolerate Immodium fine, in collies, it can cause coma or even death.

Since Jessie is a Belgin Malinois/Collie mix, I was really glad I learned this little tidibit and did not try to self treat.
