Diabetes, Alternate Treatment / Humulin L Insulin ??

Hi, I have an 11 year old Dalmation (Kirby) with Diabetes, diagnosed two or three years ago.  We have been giving Kirby 28 units of Humulin L insulin twice a day.  They are going to stop making Humulin L and my vet hasn't come up with an alternative other than "stock up", at least not yet.  It is getting really hard to find Humulin L at this point.  Has anyone else been using Humulin and does your vet have an alternative?  Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.

When I had a diabetic dog (about 10 years ago) we managed her on twice daily injections of Humulin N. I don't know though if that's a choice for your dog though. Also there is an advertised new insulin that is species specific for dogs. I just can't find the name of it!
    I'll look through my magazines.
I did find a good link about the various insulin choices, it's from Auburn Vet school:

Since L has been discontinued, there are several other options available: Vetsulin (recently FDA-approved version of Caninsulin used extensively throughout Europe).  Predominately geared towards smaller dogs (such as mine--a Toy Poodle, diagnosed last Dec with Diabetes) as it is a U-40 insulin containing a 30/70 blend.  Many also have had great success with Humulin-N, though some have had to go to 3 shots a day to maintain adequate coverage.  Other options are Lantus and Humalog, though to date studies of their use in canines is limited--however one pet owner I know has had phenomenal results with it.
