Puppers get coccidea really easily. After that their immune systems usually take care of it, unless seriously compromised (kennel cough is a typical time for it to crop up again opportunistically).
Giardia is a different story. My dogs are exposed all the time to that one and are at extreme risk (waterfowl carry it and you can pick it up in pond water). Both parasites are treated similiarly with metronidozole, usually - or more rarely with albendazole, which is what I use to worm all my dogs every month.
