    help! pup has diarrhea!

hey guys, my 2 month sibe woke up this morning with diarrhea!

some info; .. the pet shop was feeding her Pro Plan lamb and rice, but i had bought food previously to buying the pup and had already bought her chicken and rice.. she was doing fine .. the day after the vet gave her the heart worm shot(orally) her stools were very mushy.. then they were solid again a day or 2 after.. but now its bad, shes eliminating a lot and very wet...  other that ive been making sure she keeps everything out of her mouth, but maybe i missed one?

are there anyways to diagnose the problem without visiting the vet first?  should i wait about a day to see if maybe it clears?

Don't wait. Take your pup to the vet asap. Your dog is young and may have been exposed to a number of illnesses while at the pet store. Diarrhea can easily dehydrate a small, young puppy, and it's possible she has an intestinal parasite like cocciddia, for example, which will not clear up on its own or without medication. Also, I'm sure your vet gave her an oral dewormer, not an oral heartworm shot. Your pup will probably need more than one round of dewormer, which knocks out intestinal worms like hook and round worms.

So my advice is to get her in asap and have them do a fecal to find out what's going on. Good luck!

yeah actually it was a dewormer.. lol sorry..

*sigh* i hope its nothing serious!!

also, she was playing with my neighbors dogs who i dont think get shots or see the vet often.. is it possible something could have been transmitted to her while they were playing around?
    • Gold Top Dog
Yes, it is possible that something could have been transmitted.  PLEASE get your puppy to the vet, especially since she has been exposed to a dog that may not be receiving the appropriate amount of vet care.

You can never be too careful, take her to the vet right away.

    *update*

ok, what kalua has is not really diarrhea i think... what it is, when she has to elminate, its basically all liquid that shoots out.. no solid pieces at all.. to me disrrhea is more like when she cant control eliminating, and thats not the case here

has anyone heard of these symptoms?

also, if it means anything, shes eating Pro Plan chicken and rice...  i plan on switching her to Castor and Pollux after shes done wit the bag, but ill switch her now if Pro Plan doesnt have such a great rep... and especially if its causing this.

I dont think this kind of diahrrea is being caused by the food.  You need to have her checked for parasites.  Puppies can easily get them... as mentioned it could be coccidia or maybe Giardia.  You need to get her a fecal done at the vet.

Agreed. This isn't being caused by the food. It is more likely an intestinal parasite, and it will not go away without getting medication from your vet. If you let this linger, your pup will not get better and could easily suffer from dehydration. Bring her to the vet for a fecal.

the day after the vet gave her the heart worm shot(orally) her stools were very mushy.

Did she actually get an injection or was something squirted in her mouth?  Either way, the timing in relation to the watery stools, might not be a coincidence.  I agree with everyone else.  I'd get her to a vet, and since it's Saturday, maybe an emergency clinic is in order.  A 2 mo. old puppy can become dehydrated very quickly and I wouldn't want to take a chance.

Please get her to the vet ASAP; there should be an emergency vet in your area; if you call your regular vet when they're closed ( like this afternoon) you will of course get a message saying they are closed but if there is an emergency vet in your area the message should also give you the number of the emergency vet. That's what the vets around here do. I lost a pup to stools like you're describing when I was a child because my folks couldn't get the pup to the vet until Saturday.
