    need help

    Hi everyone,

I am new to this forum, but I have been reading some of the posts for a few days.  I was interested in the questions and the replies.

Anyway, I was wondering.  I have a 3 month old amstaff and I notcied that she has been scatching alot and I noticed that she has some hair missing on her elbows.

I am assuming that maybe she has fleas.  She will be exactly 3 months old tomorrow and since I really don't take her outside where all the dogs do their business (she doesn't have all her shots) I was wondering where she could have picked them up from.

I did get him from a farm in Georgia.  Anyway, I will be getting some flea and tick shampoo and some flea stuff.  I was wondering is a flea collar good or should I get something else.

Also, about the missing hair on her elbows,  what is this all about. Is there anything I can do to help with this problem before it gets worse.

Thanks for any info or solutions you can offer.

    Here's a picture of Smoke

First, welcome to the forum. Smoke is a pretty girl.

Secondly, bathe her in a gentle shampoo, let her dry for a 24 hour period, then purchase a flea preventative and apply it to her.

She is picking up fleas from the grass, tree's outside. You may not see them but they are there.

And lastly, please get her shots done. Very important for her immune system to complete those puppy shots. You may break them up a bit but do complete them.

    Good luck.

    Thanks for the advice.

Smoke is a HIM.  My mistake for putting she instead of HIM at the earlier post.  Also, I am getting him all his shots but the next one is not scheduled until July 13th and then sometime in August.

I do have gentle shampoo (no tears) is that acceptable or should I get the tick and flea shampoo.

Any help about the elbow situation?
    • Gold Top Dog
I dont think the elbows are anything to worry about... a lot of dogs just have little bald spots on thier elbows.

A baby shampoo would be good... or like you mentioned you have.  I personaly wouldnt go with a flea and tick shampoo... but make sure you follow with frontline.  Make sure you wait 24 hours after bathing to apply it.

Actually this year for some reason Frontline has not been doing it job so I would highly recommend using Advantage instead.  I work as a vet tech and hear a few times a day how its not working and the vet suggesting that one.

    Thanks,

I will use the shampoo I have.  Also, before posting I decided to place an order on line and for some reason I was looking into flea and tick remedies and I decided to go with a brand of Farnam Bio-Spot for dogs.

According to the customers that used it, it got better reviews than Fontline, and Advantage.  Hope I did right.

Also, what do you think if I put some Vitamin E oil on the elbows?

    • Gold Top Dog
If your worried about skin or coat conditions such as bald spots or want to make sure you dont have any out of the norm... I think giving suppiments internally would be better than topically.  I actually dont know what effect topically apllying vitamin E would have.

You can buy peoples vitamins... get fish oil, vitamin A and vitamin E.

You can put these pills in the food or give them in something as a treat but you will need to give them 2x a day... am and pm.
For the fish oil I would give about 800 mg twice daily.  Vitamin E you can give 200IU 2x a day and vitamin A anywhere from 2,000-4,000 mg 2x a day.

These suppliments are great for any dog... an excellent way to improve sin and coat.  You can get pre-made stuff already mixed for you from the vet such as Efa-Z Plus or 3V Caps.

Have a high quality food can also have a huge difference on itchiness, skin, coat, shedding and lots more.

Just make sure when supplimenting with vitamins A and E you give them together.  And make sure your fish oil is fish body oil, not liver oil which is just another form of vitamin A.  Sorry to sound complicated, its easy once you get it... and great for your dog.

ETA:  Someone please correct me if Im wrong on any of that...

That is very helpful information.  I will try the vitamins.

Also, since I have an amstaff I have been feeding him SMART PUPPY by IAMS since this what the breeder was feeding him.
It's suppose to be good for the puppy, but who knows.

Do I give him these vitamins forever, all is there a time period.

    Thanks in advance

    Forever is great.

I would look into a better food than Iams....

Food is a highly discussed topic and you can get loads of info on it in the nutrition thread...  but if your buying from Petsmart or some place ilke that I would go for Nutro Natural Lamb and Rice or Nutro Ultra... Blue Buffalo if they have it is good also.  Feed stores are going to carry more quality food than a Petsmart will.  Im not nearly as informed as many others who regular the nutrition area so I would check that out.

Thanks Loveukaykay,  your input is greatly appreciated.

I have checked that website out this morning so I will be looking into some other brand of food.  I hope Smoke won't mind.

I will also look into the nutrition forum when I have a chance.

I'll put a picture of SMOKE cause he says thanks too.

Dont worry, he'll love a better food, he'll feel a lot better too.  He is beautiful, I love his color!

    Your welcome!![:)]

    • Gold Top Dog
I just want to add... if you do switch him to a higher quality food he may or may not have diharrea (sp?) for the first week or two... this is normal as the body adjusts to it and in a way expells what may need to be expelled.

A great way to tell if the food is right for him is by his stools... they should be small and firm.  You generally want to give it about a month before deciding on it.  Nothing should be a problem though unless he has allergies.

    Good luck.

Hi, no matter if she is a he or he is a she, still a beautiful puppy. And I can smell the puppies breath from here... Ahhh!

You could try some Bag Balm on his elbows to see if that helps.

I wouldn't use a flea and tick shampoo either. Something like Oatmeal and aloe, something gentle.  Great on the shots. Sounds like you have that under control. [:)

Advantage, Advantix, Frontline, and I don't remember the other one. I am not sure about Bio Spot. My vet seemed to frown on it. Not because he wants to sell me his products. I have a great relationship with my vets. Anyway, Amy has given you great advice also.
Here are a couple of sites for your review on dog food and how to buy a good quality one for your monies and the health of your boy.
