Allergy to fleas?

    Allergy to fleas?

JayJay and I just got back from a long vacation. At our last stop at a flea ridden Uncles house I tryed to keep JayJay outside but he must have still picked them up. Jay Jay is on Frontline but I still see fleas crawling around on his belly. Now his sides (ribs) and neck are broke out with hives. They are about 50-70 small raised bumps that are driving him crazy itching. This also happened last year w/ a close encounter to fleas. Is this an allergy to fleas?
I was thinking about giving him a benedryl but dont want him to feel konked out. Would it be safe to give him Claritin (lortidiene) which is non-drowsy? Has anyone ever used this on their dog? Or heard that it was safe/unsafe? JayJay weighs about 110 lbs how much is enough?
    Please Help My poor baby!!!!!!!

I wouldn't worry a bit about knocking him out.  It probably won't anyway, but the most important thing is to get him some relief.  I would give him 100 mg of benadryl.  You can buy the 25mg capsules and give 4, and you might want to give that 3 times a day, but for sure at least twice a day.  I'd also bathe him with some soothing flea shampoo or you're going to have an invasion pretty soon.  I don't have flea problems, so I don't know why the Frontline wouldn't have worked, but I'd mention it to the vet and see if there's something better they recommend.

I have found that Advantage works better for my dogs than Frontline. I give them Advantage for fleas and Interceptor for heartworm prevention. Two of my dogs don't even need Advantage because they don't get fleas for some reason. Give your dog a nice long bath with flea-killing shampoo and I would spray for fleas so they don't breed. Any fleas that jump on a dog with Advantage are supposed to die instantly! Good luck!

Benedryl is extremely effective in relieving itchy skin so I would reccommend you use that.  The dosage for dogs is 1-2/mg per 1lb of body weight 3-4x per day.  So a 100 lb dog could in fact handle 800/mg throughout a day given in 4 200 mg doses.  He either needs 100mg a few times a day or 200mg a few times a day depending on the severity of his itchiness and breakouts and his reponse to the Benedryl.  Dont worry about making him sleepy, some dogs get that way, some dont, but he will welcome the relief either way.

Frontline has been having problems this year and if its not doing its job on your dog you should switch to Advantage.  I hear this 100x a day at work.  The Frontlines not working the vet says togo to Advantage.... so try that.

Kayla was allergic to fleas and one bite would get her all rashy and the vet gave us OxyDex cream which is 5% benzoyl peroxide.  This flushs out the skin.  You can also get some soothing spray for the spots.

Thank you all for the advice. I did give JayJay 3/4 of a Claritin pill. He is still a little itchy but def. less than before. He doesnt seem to have any behavior change. I will try some benedryl tonight.  Check out these pics of the hives:

JayJay is very handsome.  Are those bumps gone now?  I ask because someone else posted recently with pictures that were exactly like that (I think it was referred to in the post topic as "cysts" though, so you might search).  Anyway, if it was hives related to an allergic reaction, they should be going down with the antihistamines.  If they don't, it might be an infection and you'd want to get him into the vet.  My lab has soooo many allergies and skin infections that anytime I see anything like this, I assume the worst.  Hopefully it's not the case for you though.

No the bumps are not gone, in fact i believe that there are now more of them. This also happened last year when jay jay got fleas. The bumps eventually went away but left jay jay w/ small bald spots everywhere. My vet said that jay jay is allergic to flea bites so i am assuming that each bump is a bite. If they dont go away by tomorrow i will def. have a visit w/ the vet. My poor baby I know he must feel so uncomfortable! [:(]

Yes, that's what mine gets too.  Sores that heal (crust over) and leave a little bald area.  My lab gets them on her underside mostly and a few on her chest and armpit, etc.  One thing that might help those heal is using a medicated shampoo.  I use Nu Sal T, but I think I'm going to try Selsun Blue, since I'm tired of paying the higher cost plus shipping fees for what smells like the same thing.  Anyway, it really helps calm down the itching and the sores heal faster.

Hey Cristina - this is the link (with pictures) from the other poster who had the same problem:  [linkhttp://forum.dog.com/asp/tm.asp?m=78663]http://forum.dog.com/asp/tm.asp?m=78663[/link]

    Cathy Thanks for your help!!
I gave JayJay 2 doses of benedryl yesterday and one so far today (2 25mg each dose). He has had a drastic decrease in itching and the hives are dissapearing!!!!! YAY! [sm=clapping%20hands%20smiley.gif]
He is however much more calm. He keeps nuzzling me and seems clingy. The most noted difference in his behavior is when the door bell rings, he just looks out the window instead of wagging and wiggling all over!
Hopefully by tomorrow the hives will be all down and gone. Thanks again for the help!![:D]

That's great Cristina.  I imagine that it may be a strange feeling for JayJay at first.  Unfortunately, I have to use Benadryl frequently for my allergy lab, and I can't tell it affects her at all anymore, so they do get accustomed to it.  Hopefully you won't have to continue using it though and the hives will go away and stay away [:)].

When KayCee had the reaction to her 2ed set of annual vax, she had the little knots on her snout that looked just like pencil erasures under the skin.  Her ears had lumps in the that felt like there were quarters in her ears, and then her body had evn larger ones.  Her entire tummy was fire engine red and ONE HUGE thick hive.  Her temp went up to right at 107 and she had to be rushed back to vet for shots.  This was after hours (we were the last to see him that day) and I gave her benadryl while wating for vet's answering service to get hold of him.

By the way, she is also allergic to fleas, but not to this extent. She just itches.
