Should my dog have surgery or be put to sleep?!

The same with the broken leg. I did not get the impression that it was intentional

denise; I don't think anyone suggested that she broke the dog's leg intentionally; she was reacting to the dog biting her when she threw it. However, she didn't drop the dog or set it on the ground; she had to throw it with a fair amount of force to break it's leg. She is also seems defensive about her actions; " I had to keep her in a headlock the entire time I raced home with her to keep her from biting me."  Just about any dog in that amount of pain will bite; that does not make her dog vicious yet I think she mentions this because she wants others to think it is.

Denise, that is possible...the written word is often different from what is being felt.  But the over all tone was validation for putting her dog down...this statement particularly alarmed me, as you can google "thyroid in dogs" and come up with some knowledge.

I don't understand how a thyroid problem would affect it

It was the lack of being willing to learn from some of us that bothered me.  Why come here?

I was considering sending her to a behavioral camp until this accident happened today.

Why??  If you were having no trouble with her until this incident?

I don't know, you sound just like someone on the nutrition threads that asks questions like, do you know anything about this food and then it turns out they've used it.  HUMMMM . . .

What really, really disturbs me is that anyone (not necessarily Smittykel) would only consider euthanasia as an option. Why? Why is it 'Live with me or death?'. It seems to me that euthanasia should always be the LAST option.

It is a terrifiing experience to have a dog bite you

Gee, it might be that I have a Great Dane,,,but I really find it hard to believe that it would be a terrifing experince to have a Chi mix bite.  Somehow, I feel the dog is way to small to ever have it be terrifing.

I am not sure I agree with that, Dyan.  Small dogs can hurt.  Pain can, to some people, be terrifying.  Having said that, it is certainly easier to control a small dog who bites.  I have been bitten a few times by small dogs and was always able to convince them that they should bite someone else, if you catch my drift.  [;)]

I was flat out attacked by a chow when I was a young man.  That was a far different situation from your typical ankle biter.  I had to kill this dog to stop the attack.  Actually, it would be more accurate to say he died of injuries he sustained in the attack, as he was alive when I left him but was dead when his owner got home.

I was attacked by a dog larger than I was as a two year old child. The dog had my by the throat, on the ground.

That said, a Chi biting, or trying to bite.... Not terrifying.  Cats are way scarier, to me. Of course, I've had "cat bites will cause you to lose your arm" pounded into my head since I started grooming[;)]

Murphy and I were attacked by a pit bull (and yes, it was a pit bull) a few months back. He and I were both injured.... and it was very terrifying. What terrified me the most was that I thought he was going to kill Murphy and I felt practically helpless to stop it. Now I carry pepper spray and a pocket kinfe with me on our walks, as well as my cell phone.

My dog Sammy was attacked  by an Akita many years ago,,,and I was bitten trying to save her.  It was scary no doubt. And my sons GF has a long hair'd chi named Brianna,,,she shows her teeth and growls all the time.  Of course a bit could hurt...a darn mosquito hurts when it bites. No comparison to me.
But my same dog Sammy was a pit bull and she used to try to bite me all the time,,,she used to steal things and run behind a chair and snarl and growl...the fact that it was my own dog made me angrier than anything, but she sure didn't scare me.
I still say the same thing,,,,I find it hard to believe that a Chi could be terrifying.
At least for many or most people!
