Alopecia skin care?

    Alopecia skin care?

My 10-year-old pom has alopecia X (diagnosed about 14 months ago).  She was on melatonin for a while but the hair loss gradually worsened so I took her off it.  Anyway, she now has a large bald spot between her shoulder blades, from her neck to to maybe 1/3 down her back.  She wears a loose t-shirt when she goes out for her walks, to protect her skin from the sun.  She seems to not want to walk at times -- I can't tell if she's bothered by the NY heat or if she's just being stubborn and wants to stay outside longer -- and wonder if the lack of hair is making her feel the heat more?  Was she more "insulated" when she had tons of hair?  If we're going out for longer than a quick bathroom break I bring water with me so she can have a drink if she needs it.  Does an alopecia dog need to stay indoors during the day, and do they feel the heat more than a dog with fur?  Thanks!

I've only heard of Alopecia X once, but never really knew what it was. I am familiar with Color Dilute Alopecia (I have a dog with it).
    Is it the same?
If so, we do the same as you, just cover her in the sun, sunscreen when needed. It's most of her body (except the white patches which are unaffected and nice and thick).
She gets her Omaga's in her food too. The thin hair she does have all over her body is shiny and soft and very fine texture, she's a short haired breed though. Her skin is quite good also.

Does you pom get any spot on flea or tick treatments?
The affected area of the neck and back you describe made me ask. One of my mother's cats has been through various treatments this last year for alopecia and it turns out she was allergic to the spot on flea/tick treatment. She's seen several vets and this was totally overlooked. One month off of it and she has more hair already.
