Rough elbows?

    Rough elbows?

I just noticed yesterday that Pofi has small, rough patches on each of his front leg "elbows".  Very small, no bigger than a nickel, of rough dry skin with no fur. His coat elsewhere is shiny, soft, healthy looking. He eats a grain free food (Solid Gold Barking at the Moon).  I've also tried to make sure treats are grain free.

What should I be looking at?  Supplement?  Something topical?  Since we adopted Mia, his eyes have been a little "goopy," and they never were before except for when he got a bit run down on our camping trip. Mia's eyes were also goopy when we first got her and still are, though less so, so I thought it was somthing they were passing back and forth.

We've had Mia for over 3 months now and they first were both eating CA Natural Lamb and Rice and now Barking at the Moon, which is principally Turkey and Salmon. So I had sort of ruled out food allergy on the eyes, but now he's got rough elbows, so I don't know!

By rough elbows, do you mean kind of calloused?  That's common in big dogs who lay on hard surfaces.  Mick started getting them when we remodeled our house- instead of laying in his crate or in the livingroom, he chose to lay on the concrete slab so he could watch Daddy work.  Anyway, try rubbing some Bag Balm into the spots.  It works wonders on rough/dry/chapped skin (as long as your dog isn't like Mick, and licks it off.  LOL).

Sounds right to me!  I love Bag Balm.

Isn't it the greatest?  It's great as a diaper cream for human babies, too.  In fact, I gave some to our daughter-in-law when she was pregnant.

    Thanks, Sue and Katie!

I do have Bag Balm - years ago when I worked in the bridal industry, our seamstresses always had it for their fingers - working with the fabric dried your fingers out and Bag Balm would absorb pretty well and not leave greasy marks on fabric from your hands.  It's at work, so I'll bring it home when I'm back in the office next week.  Second week traveling for business.  Can't tell you how much I miss my furries - especially my Pofi.  He's such a funny boy!

Vaseline is also OK I am told by our vet, but our dog is a "licker"

Marley has this too...I bought him a bed for outside, but half the time he lays on the concrete!!! It's annoying! I'll try the bag balm. Will the fur grow back?

My Rottie would litterly slam himself down.  He would lay down hard and he had hard calouses (sp).  I tried the bag balm and that soften but he never did grow hair back.  I tried dog beds and he preferred the hard floor .

    ...Will the fur grow back?

If you catch it early enough, the hair should grow back.  The idea is to keep the skin soft.  Once it gets tough, the hair won't grow.  Some of Mick's hair did come back.  Most likely, all of it would have grown back if His Royal Highness hadn't licked his elbows.

    Thanks, Sue and Katie!...

Anything I can do to help.  [:)

Thanks micksmom! He actually still has fur on those spots...its just very short! I have to admit that I have been putting neosporin, mushers secret, or sometimes lotion on them, but I didn't think of bag balm that's a much better idea! I'll keep my fingers crossed it grows out.

You can spray a little Bitter Apple or something similar over the Bag Balm, too.  Unless Marley is like Mick, that should stop him from licking.

Okay...I bought the bag balm and put it on right before our walk...so he would forget about it by the time we get back. He hasn't had a chance to lick it (Heh, Heh).

How are Pofi's elbows doing with the bag balm? Marley's are not getting better...in fact I think they are gettting worse. I have some other things to try in the works...just wanted to see if you had tried something new or had success! [:)]
