Chops threw up 3 times last night... should I worry yet?

    Hi!
I might be overreacting, but our Chops threw up 3 times last time (once at 4:30, 5:30 and 7). He seems to be doing better already so I don't want to worry if it seems like there's nothing to worry about. My wife gave him a cup of EVO before she left because he was already hanging out by the pantry about 8AM and was whining for food.

Basically yesterday was as he's eaten every day the past week except that we gave him his buffered aspirin (one 500mg tab for our 120lb dog which is less than most people recommend as its about 4mg/lb) with a can of green beans as he ate his EVO dinner early and we're trying to not have the aspirin kick in until he's resting and tired later on.

The throw-up was almost all green beans and bile and then some bits of cheese we used to wrap the glucosamine, fish oil and the tylenol (small strips for each). There was no blood and it wasn't odd looking in any way (outside of it being Chops' vomit, of course!).

I'm not sure what upset his stomach... there was no EVO to be seen in their so I don't know if its the aspirin w/ just green beans or maybe the green beans itself? Or the fish oil since that's usually given only in the morning?

Anyone think there's much to worry about? He was already perking up this morning in the hour I was there before work. He was trying to wrestle with me when I went outside to see what was in it, although he's not allowed until his leg heals of course! :)

Thanks everyone - just want to make sure we're doing OK!

My vet tells me to watch them for any other signs.  I.e. Listlessness, crying, unable to pass anything, etc.  I used to get really upset about it - but I don't worry now unless it's more than 24 hours and they can't keep anything down.

Otherwise I usually just give them some rice and then wait and see.   I've heard pumpkin (plain pumkpin - not the pie filling) is very good for upset stomachs/digestive issues.

Asprin is quite possibly your culprit - it is known to cause digestive upset.

Did you give him tylenol in addition to the asprin?

Isn't tylenol an absolute no-no for dogs?  I thought it was toxic to them?

    Found this online:
Based on reactions in our canine patients, this is the ranking I would give
these medications:  safest = acetaminophen (Tylenol tm),  also safe =
aspirin,  less safe = ibuprofen (Advil tm, Motrin Rx).  However, this is
the ranking that I would give them based on the reports in the literature
and factoring in the likelihood of a bad reaction causing death:  safest =
aspirin, also safe but less so = acetaminophen and less safe = ibuprofen.
The reason for these rankings include these things. Aspirin is reasonably
likely to cause gastric ulcers, which can be life threatening if ignored
but which respond to withdrawal of the medication. Acetaminophen doesn't
seem to cause ulcers but there are uncommon reactions to it in which liver
failure occurs and this may not respond to therapy, so death is a
possibility. Ibuprofen is very likely to cause ulcers, with 100% of dogs
developing ulcers with the use of ibuprofen in at least one study. On the
other hand, lots of my clients come in and tell me "I gave my dog an
ibuprofen last night" and I have only had to treat one or two cases of
ulcers and I can't recall a dog dying from this medication, yet.

Ummm, so now I'm confused.  What's the answer?  I give my young boy with pano a periodic low dose buffered asprin.  Is that wrong?

    Hi all!
From what I've been told by my vet and what I've read over the past few years since we've had Chops...

Aspirin is the ONLY one to give. Tylenol and IB are both potentially dangerous to dogs. Aspirin is supposed to very safe as long as you stay in the guidelines. My vet even said you could use it daily for a LONG time before having to worry about issues like ulcers (although its possible, but highly unlikely).

I think it might be the culprit, but we've had him on buffered (the easiest on the stomach), only gave him 1 500mg (instead of the 1.5 recommended by the twice a day, we gave him just 1 pill once) and he's been OK up until then.

I'm thinking it was either a horrible coincidence or maybe the fact that he had two cans of green beans (1 can with the EVO meals and then 1 at night so he'd feel a little more hungry and its our only hope to get him to shed some weight).

Anyway- my wife goes home @ lunch so I'll see how he is. He seemed a little better when we left so he wasn't too lethargic and certainly had an appetite. I'm just wondering if either we gave too many green beans or that he should take aspirin with a food of more nutritional value! :)

    Thanks everyone!

Tell Emma that. Less than a month, and she started vomiting blood.

I'm sorry- I had not read about emma... I'm just going by what my vet said and from what I had read on my own.

Could you point me to the thread where that was talked about (i searched for both emma and aspirin on the old boards and didn't pull anything).

Obviously I'm now worried about giving our dog aspirin daily although as I said the vet seemed to think a few weeks of it once a day would be fine... I'd hate to think that's wrong.

Anyone else have any info on that?

It wasn't really discussed here, but...

Three vets told me to give Emma an aspirin once a day, for an injury that she had. A couple of weeks later, she started vomiting dried blood. I told the vet and discontinued the aspirin. She's no longer vomiting.

Emma is, however, accident prone and hypersensitive.

I'm sorry to hear about Emma...

Once you discontinued aspirin did everything else seem normal? Reading that story gives me pause about giving it every night- I think we might just use it on the really bad days as his leg gets better.

I'm always medicine-adverse but was told by the vet its safe as long as you stay within the recommended doseage. I guess maybe that's a fair rule of thumb, but it should also be said with a warning to look for certain things as it has risks like anything else.

I hope Emma is doing well- were there any lingering affects from that incident?
    Thanks!

Once I discontinued the aspirin, she stopped vomiting.  Life with Emma is anything but normal:)  I agree that they should tell us what to watch for. I fed her some chamomile tea for about a week to sooth her tummy, and a bland diet, and she settled right down. There aren't any lingering affects that I know of, but who knows? The vets can't figure out what is going on with her.

Chops is doing much better- went now 24 hours and no more throwing up and he's spunky again.

We are going to stop the aspirin though and only give on days where he's really sore, which hopefully won't be too many more. :)

    Thanks for the advice!

You may want to ask a holistic vet about alternative pain management techniques:-))

No Glenda, Buffered asprine is safe, something like St. Johns childrens asprine is much safer. NSIDS are not like Ibruprophen,  to include tylenol. NOT SAFE.
